The Wye Valley in South Wales
The Wye Valley offers some of the most spectacular and unspoiled scenery to be enjoyed ...
Unfortunately, Japan’s history of earthquakes, fires and wars means that few things remain from old times – but there’s more than enough in the country to make your visit a unique, if relatively expensive, experience. And getting around is easy enough, as Japan has one of the most hi-tech train systems in the world.
Must see and do in Japan: Experiencing the neon-light-dominated Tokyo is an absolute must, while a flavour of the old Japan can be found in Kyoto, with its hundreds of temples, shrines and gardens. A visit to Nagasaki, the city decimated by an atomic bomb blast during World War II, will provide you with a thought-provoking trip. You should also try to take a ride on a ‘bullet train’ which travels at speeds in excess of 300km/h.
Top tip for Japan backpacking: For getting around and to save money, buy a Japan Rail Pass (only available to foreign tourists), which can usually be purchased through Japan Airlines or a tour operator. This pass allows unlimited travel on Japan Rail trains, buses and ferries, and costs from around £150 for a seven-day pass.
Safety in Japan: Japan is an exceptionally safe country, and the Japanese people are known for being very friendly and helpful. The only real danger to you will be the temptation to spend too much!
