Chocolat (2000)

Romantic comedy with Johnny Depp

An enchanting tale of a single mother (Juliette Binoche) who takes her six-year-old daughter to an ultra-conservative French town to open up a chocolate shop across the street from the local church.

Tagline: One taste is all it takes.

Despite some initial skepticism, the majority of townspeople warm to them, especially when they taste their products – that is, apart from the town’s mayor, who seems determined to shut her shop down.

Despite some odd combinations of accents and accusations from critics that it watered down the original book too much, the movie is a moving and heart-warming tale of love and temptation. Juliette Binoche excels in her role, and as an added something for the ladies there’s Johnny Depp playing the gypsy-like river drifter Roux. It’ll make you laugh and make you cry in equal proportions.
