Getting started in hockey

Useful information for beginner hockey players

So you want to get into hockey? Whether you have ambitions of making it to the NHL or your aims are less grand, hockey is a great sport both on a competitive and recreational level.

Clearly an understanding of the game is of important as is being proficient on the ice, but one factor to consider is that it may actually cost several hundred dollars to get started – there’s the gear, plus registration, and the cost involved of getting to and from the rink.

Costs can be minimized in some cases, with many leagues and minor hockey associations offering programs that provide equipment for rent, second-hand gear or starter kits at a reduced price.

A good place to start is USA Hockey, which has junior and adult hockey programs providing opportunities for players of all ability levels. In addition, the organization supports a disabled hockey program and maintains an inline hockey program.
