Getting involved in tennis is not as difficult as it once was, with many initiatives, particularly for youngsters, aimed at getting people involved in this popular and healthy racquet sport.

There are public parks, many of which are free or charge very little, in which you can get started. General sports and leisure centres provide facilities both indoors and out, and there are a huge number of tennis clubs around the country happy to open their doors to beginner players.

There is no age limit to getting involved, provided that you can hold a tennis racquet and are able to get around the court.

The United States Tennis Association (USTA) has decided on a rule change for kids' tennis. ‘QuickStart Tennis’ is a play format change designed to help youngsters to get involved in the sport. The new method will be implemented for all tennis training involving children up to ten years of age. It is played with a scaled down racquet, softer and less bouncy balls, and a smaller court. The game is a fun introduction to the tennis and will mean that children will be able to play the game within their own capabilities as they develop. The USTA will role out the new rules in 2012 they will be applied to all USTA tournaments and teaching from then on.

The USTA has affiliated clubs and organizations all over the country and can point you in the right direction. They also provide a list of USTA qualified coaches.
