A lowdown on key triathlon races
To race a triathlon in the UK is easier than you may think. There are triathlon races throughout the year, although the season tends to be from May to September. As in running, there are some flagship triathlon races that prove athlete favorites year after year. Here's the realbuzz.com guide to a few triathlons you might like to enter.
The London Triathlon: 1,500m swim/40km bike/10km run
London has grown to become one of the UK's flagship triathlons. It has become the largest triathlon in the world with over 8,000 competitors. Held annually at the heart of London's docklands it is the ideal race for those new to triathlon and each year over 50 per cent of competitors have never competed in a triathlon before. This race has developed into a huge weekend of triathlon with super sprint, sprint, and Olympic distances all on offer.
Many competitors compete for charity and huge totals are raised annually for a whole host of varied charities. This year the route takes in some of London's best known landmarks, and should be a fixture in any triathlete's calendar.The following race distances are available: sprint/olympic/super sprint/team relay sprint/team relay Olympic.
The Royal Windsor Triathlon: 1,500m swim/40km bike/10km run
The Royal Windsor Triathlon has grown to be one of the best race in the UK. Previously voted by the triathlon voting public as the ‘Race of the Year’, and with more than 2,000 entries, it’s also one of the biggest.
With Windsor Castle, Eton College and the River Thames as the backdrop, it's a stunning course. The river swim is followed by a bike course that takes in a number of villages around Berkshire, and returns through Windsor Great Park. The multi-lap run course winds around the Great Castle, over Eton Bridge and along Eton High Street, passing Eton College. The following race distances are available: sprint and Olympic.
The Ashborne Duathlon: 12k run/40km bike/4km run
This race played host to the ‘Powerman’ race; that means its going to be a tough one. It is held in the beautiful setting of Carsington Reservoir, Ashbourne. A good race for those fit athletes out there.
Ironman UK: 2.4mile swim, 112 mile bike/26.2 mile run
An event with over 1,500 competitors who take part in the 140.6 mile race. In 2009 the event moved to a new date in August, and a new venue in Bolton. Ironman UK offers 30 qualifying slots for the Ironman World Championship.
Uk Ironman: 1.2 mile swim/56 mile bike/13.1 mile run
The UK Ironman 70.3 mile race in Exmoor has gained a reputation as the toughest 70.3 Triathlon on the world circuit with over 3,000m of climbing on the bike and legs. Athletes have 9 hours 30 minutes to complete the course and call themselves an Ironman. The event offers qualifying slots for the 70.3 World Championships.
