Why not try an extreme sport?

Extreme sports are not just for adrenaline junkies...

Extreme sports are about exhilaration, skill and an element of danger — so they are almost a total antidote to our safety-first world! However, all too often the risk of doing an extreme sport is overplayed — even though almost anyone can compete in them in relative safety.

We have selected a few of the most accessible extreme sports out there that may be well worth giving a go — no matter who you are! — and found out who they are suitable for and what risk factors there are. So, why not check out our extreme sport suggestions and take up an extreme challenge?

  1. Kite surfing as an extreme sport
  2. Mountaineering as an extreme sport
  3. Caving as an extreme sport
  4. Skydiving as an extreme sport
  5. Surfing as an extreme sport
  6. White water rafting as an extreme sport
  7. Scuba diving as an extreme sport

  • Chris_Whitehead 'I did a bit of skateboarding back in my youth and could well take to the ide of mountainboarding as it very much does seem just like downhilling on a large skateboard. Think I'll leave the rest to the real hardcore adrenaline seekers out there! '

  • Iceman1959 'I was a skydiver up until 4-5 years ago, only did 200 jumps tho'...the problem, at least what I perceived to be the problem, with skydiving is that, like most other 'extreme' sports, it is very cliche'ish in that unless you are experienced then it is difficult to become part of the regular group. With skydiving, in particular, it's all about up'ing the level of what you're doing...getting to the next license level by doing 2-ways, 4-ways, 8-ways and performing certain manouvers. I found it difficult to break into the established groups that I needed to get into to progress...I would assume it's the same for sports like climbing, and kite surfing...probably not an issue with scuba diving, skiing, etc. Dodger...'

  • dadster 'I have been fortunate enough to have participated in many extreme sports - one that I would recommend to anyone is to take up white water body boarding! I did it on the North Island of New Zealand. It was amazing, the rush of been in the water and so close to the rapids (and the rocks) is amazing. Look it up and have a go!'

  • Nicky192 'I'm a keen snowboarder and have surfed lots (bit am really rubbish at the latter. We've done mountainboarding a few times and have our own as it's very similar to snowboarding. We really enjoyed it but it's just not quite the same. Would really really like to get into kite surfing but just don't have the time or money. '

  • louisemcgreal 'Try Groupon for great offers on extreme sports. I have had a 2 hour surf lesson for £10, also booked another 2 hour lesson for £10, done a Scuba taster for approx £7, 90 min ski lesson for £11 and doing my Padi referral scuba course for £69. Let's you try things cheaper that you perhaps couldn't normally afford. '

  • Nicky192 'My problem is that I get obsessed and want to become an expert and buy all the gear and do it every weekend!! I've done climbing and kayaking with Groupon so you're right it's an excellent way to 'taste' new sports '

  • wastemanagement99 'I saw kiteboarding for the first time a couple years ago when I was on vacation in Florida. And I was like "I have to do that." I haven't gotten up the nerve to try it yet, but maybe this year. I have tried parasailing which is actually not scary at all and very relaxing.
