highs & lows...
Dec2120115:41 p.m.
Had thought long and hard about posting this but figure must be balanced in what I write showing both the highs & lows. Well the current position is a low but do not under any circumstances feel sorry in any way as this is entirely of my own making…figure the crime is abuse of a pair of worn out running shoes, in hindsight should’ve thrown them away at 400-500 miles, ran them totally beyond bald and am now paying the price.
My running log makes very poor reading indeed…today is Dec 21 and this month have only managed 3 runs giving me a grand total of 17 miles! Last run was 9 days ago! Have filled my none running time doing absolutely no exercise, more by design to be honest as figured if I allowed myself anywhere near a gym then the treadmill would’ve been just been so tempting. My Physio confirmed my belief that the current injury is indeed metatarsal related…he used the term Metatarsalgia – thanks Malcolm.
Although I left the Physio feeling positive and hoped the situation would improve steadily the reality is actually something else entirely. Improvement just is not happening and every day that drags by feels like another training opportunity missed. Really not sure how to deal with this as currently just walking is aggravating it; the temptation is to try and run but to date every attempt seems to set me back further and the pain is worse every time.
I carry my bag of running kit everywhere but have so far resisted the daily temptation to run; my next must do race is 27 Dec at Ripon so perhaps will do nothing till then? Made the matter so much worse this week by ignoring an irritation on my left heal, could see it was dry but did nothing about it; paid the price with my procrastination early in the week when my heal split in the cold! So with painful Metatarsalgia in one foot and a split heal on the other am a right crippled old git!
Reckon the split heal was a blessing in disguise as was close to running that particular day…Will try to find some positive in all of this as perhaps the legs were trying to tell me something…

SeanG 'Doesn't sound good. Makes my 1,000 to 1,500 miles per pair of shoes look good, and then I always feel that I'm throwing them too early! Would hope that metatarsal and cracked heel sort themselves out pretty soon. Keep my fingers crossed for you.' added 21st Dec 2011

malcolms 'Sorry to hear that Alaistair, the more padding you wear the easier it is (ie 2 pairs of socks etc) and sometimes sorbothane pads can help. Perhaps the rest will make you come back stronger. I've just started a pair of shoes that I hope will see me through to 3pm on April 22nd!!' added 21st Dec 2011

Raring_to_go 'Oh, what an absolute bummer :-( I had plantar fasciitis about 3 years ago and remember how painful that was, and it wasn't pleasant not being able to run for several weeks. I did swim and cycle though, which helped keep my fitness - so maybe you could give either or both of those a go. I know it's not the same as running but at least you feel you're doing something and it really helps lift your mood too. Hope it eases and that you can manage an easy jog round at the Jolly Holly, but don't come back too soon if you're not ready. Lots of races to look forward to in 2012 :-)' added 21st Dec 2011

Jenny1961 'Bit of a bummer all this I know. Re split heels- Nu-Skin works - you just 'paint' it on and it helps join the split in the heels. Easy for me to say I know but I would advise against running on the 27th and just try and shift your focus on to something else for a few more weeks until your injury is sorted. Just think of the good things you HAVE achieved this year!. Next year is another year and loads more events to train for. It's a warning to me though as I do tend to run my running shoes into the ground...and I'm sure I need a new pair. I just begrudge forking out the dosh though! Take care and hope you have a happy Xmas despite the injury :)' added 22nd Dec 2011

Johanne 'Right Alaistair - as you are about the same age as me I take great offence at the 'old' git. And If you cannot run you are just going to have to do something else - like cycling or going to spinning or body pump at the gym. So that when you start running again you will be fit and wonderful (as ever). I have run probably about the same distance as you recenrly although in considerably more runs than 3 but reckon we can easily make up for lost time and if you make a speedy recovery we are both doing the Alnwich Coastal run this year - first one back buys the ice creams (that will be you btw). I will remind you when its time to enter. Happy New Year to you and your family. lotslove. Johanne x' added 31st Dec 2011

Ruth22 'not been on realbuzz for a while so just catching up. Really sorry to hear you sounding so down. I can totally understand how demoralising it must be but you will heal in time & be running again, no matter how far away that may seem right now. And I think all of us are guilty of wearing trainers too long & over training, even though we know better! Chin up & hope you're feeling more chipper by now.' added 7th Jan 2012
