    Oh what a beautiful morning

oh what a beautiful day - no work today - yahoo. So I went for an early run and did a nice 10miler with Harv. Felt surprisingly fit, that's me, H probably felt fit too! No problems, guess that's me sorted then. Another 4 weeks before I start training for Amsterdam.

Now for the gloom, I'm off to the dentist for a filling! I don't do needles very well, everything goes kinda blurry and then the lights go out - I'll try to be brave today!

Wee update, arrived at dentist who then announced that I was to get 2 fillings - I stayed calm, needle went in, did a lot of foot tapping - didn't feel woozy - stayed awake, then she came back with another needle - thought that someone was having a laugh now, but no - again stayed conscous (apologies for spelling) - 2 fillings later and I'm still on my feet. Have to go back next Friday for ONE filling!

    Does anyone know...

how to rotate a photo so it's the right way up? I updated my photo and it's on it's side!

I am still running, but just taking it easy and enjoying running for fun. Given I'm not currently training for a marathon I will need to cut back on what I'm eating though!

Hope you guys are all well and getting out for a wee jog from time to time.

    I'm kinda missin you all.

    No more time to sulk!!

Well since I last blogged which was only yesterday, I've been out for a gentle jog with Harv. I decided not to take my ipod or 405 and it went okay. I then went for a swim and then had a post marathon massage which was really painful in areas of my legs and it has been suggested that I try yoga or pilates - I hate that sort of thing - I'm just not that flexible and I find it boring, but if it'll help my running I'll try it again (under protest, I might add).

Remember I told you I was going to a wedding at the weekend  - well OH took my FLM medal in his sporran, along with his wallet and my phone. At the end of the night when we got back to my nephews flat, I asked for my phone, it was at this point he realised that he did not have his sporran attached to him - I was distraught and so was he when he realised if my medal was a gonner then he would have to run the marathon next year to replace my one - now if you've ever met my OH, you'd know he's built for comfort, not for speed! The good news is the sporran, my medal, phone and wallet (minus money) were found, so OH can now relax, the pressure is off!!

Went to watch Aberdeen play Celtic at the weekend as well, unfortunatelyish Celtic humped the Dons, which I can cope with as it keeps Rangers slightly behind Celtic!

A few weeks before the marathon, REAL radio were looking for 14 runners to join them in the Edinburgh Hairy Haggis Relay which is included in the marathon at the end of May. Now at the time of the anouncement I was full of the joys of spring and feeling really positive about my running and I foolishly emailed them with a wee story about me - well did they not anounce live on the radio that I was one of the lucky 14. I heard this from my colleagues at work and I got an email yesterday fromthem looking for more information. Well if there was ever a reason to get off my backside, here it is. So from going to no plans to race in the near future, I'm running on the 31st May - I only hope the weather is kinder this year, it was very cold and blustery to begin with last year. Are any of you running the full marathon or running the relay?

The other thing that I should tell you is that although I said NEVER AGAIN, well I changed my mind, I've gone and got a place in the Amsterdam Marathon on 18th October, so at least I'll be training in the day light and it won't be frosty, but I wouldn't rule out the odd flurry of snow. Hopefully I'll get to my goal this time.

I've just been emailed about a 10k race in Kirkintilloch in June so I think I'll go and enter that and I might enter the Coke 10k or half marathon in East Kilbride in June, then there's the Great Scottish Run in September which will be a nice wee dress rehearsal for Amsterdam. I've just heard there's a race at Strathclyde coming up which I can run with Harv - we'll definately enter that, he's yet to run a race that he's helped me prepare for, it's time for him to enjoy the glory.

In terms of you guys, you've been great and really supportive since the marathon, I was overcome with emulsion earlier today when I read your messages. What a fabulous group you all are and I've appreciated your suport and encouragement, and it was wonderful getting to meet with a realbuzz blogger, Mike.

I'm going to move over to one of the other running groups once my training starts for the next marathon.  I'll have to check and see where Amsterdam fits in, but I hope to keep up with your news. Take care you guys and keep on running!

I'm really running the London Marathon - look me

Well I found my place in the right section, very close to the 9minute mile pacer as was everyone else and I was stood next to 3 people from Spain, who loved my outfit and guessed that I came from Scotland - good guess and I hadn't even opened my gob at this stage, the clue was in my outfit. I forgot to mention the women's urinals and the P-mates - I've never seen anything like it and there was no way I was using that facility - did any of you women use them - give me good old fashioned toilets - everytime!

Well the crowd started to move ever so slowley forward until we went into a kinda walk/jog, hey this is really happening, I'm about to run the London Marathon, I ran across the pink mats and set the 405. Feeling great, strong and fit, I can do this - noticed about half a mile along that the 405 wasn't clocking the miles, bugger, but I wasn't phased by this as I was feeling strangely strong, which is not usual for me at this stage, it usually takes about 3 miles to get into my stride so I chose to capitalise on how I was feeling, fiddled about as I ran with the 405 and it took forever to pick up a signal - it worked just before the 3mile mark. I was lovin' my music, enjoying the sunshine, lovin the banter and I began to notice that people were already beginning to walk - what the hell are they playin at and they didn't move out of the way either. Anyway soon ater the 5k mark my feet started to burn up, I felt like I was running on hot coals, very strange, but it was too busy to stop, I thought that I was developing blisters on the ball of my foot so I tried to run a wee bit differently to take the pressure off and I ran like this for another 9ish miles - when I saw an opportunity to sit down and check the situation out. The minute I loosened off my laces I felt instant relief and ran the next 2+ miles really well. At mile 16ish my calves started to tighten up so again found a gap and jumped onto the kerb and started to do some calf stretches, when I noticed a young woman sitting beside me with her head between her knees, I went over to check she was okay, she grabbed my wrist and keeled over - christ had I just killed her, no she'd fainted - I didn't think I was that pongy, but there you go. Saw a couple of marshalls and indicated to them that I needed some help and then I scarpered - I had done my bit and a medic I am not. about mile 18 I was beginning to feel a bit funny, light headed and legs a bit heavy, what was happening to me today, I deceided to walk for a bit to compose myself. The crowd was fantastic, giving out sweeties and oranges which I took and very much appreciated - the oranges were soooooo juicy. As I was wearing a kilt the crowd gave me loads of support which was amazing and kids were doing the high 5 bit, loved it all. Started to perk up and ran on again to be hit by another problem, this time the inside of the right knee, it felt like it was tightening up to the point that I couldn't straighten it, so I did a funny walk (not funny ha ha, well it might've been to the crowd)! until I came across some first aiders who iced the area and as if by magic I felt great again and off I ran for a bit when my hams decided to cramp, by now I had a big black cloud above my head, I was doomed not to complete this soddin race, but I'm made of stronger stuff and would not lie down. The cramp passed and on I went a bit of walking jogging as this was the only way for me now and I had about 10k to go, hell it was a beautiful day for a long walk and the company was most pleasant. So on I walk/jogged until I was hit by a dreadful tightness on the inside of bothe my knees, now this was too much to bear, so I pulled over - unfortunately this was outside a pub. An more senior member of the community who had had a few too many decided to impart some wisdom to me, 'you've not far to go now, come on you can do it', I smiled at him and nodded while I kind of jiggled my legs about, he put his hand in his pocket and stuck a couple of wine gums under my nose and insisted I'd feel better if I took them, what the hell I thought, it won't kill me and he's trying to be kind to me, so I took them, he was then joined by another older person - I needed to check if this was a pub or an old folks home, no definately a pub, she was carrying a glass of wine and he had a can of beer in his hand, she very sweetly told me I had a very short distance to run, by now I was gritting my teeth as no matter the distance it was going to be bloody painful. I thanked them for their help and hobbled on, the tightness was by now easing off and not a drop of alcohol passed my lips - maybe those wine gums were magic gums!! I walked and jogged and saw another first aid camp and as there was still a niggle in my knees I pulled over and was given a good rub down. By now I'm texting the world to talk of my predicament and got lots of nice messages back, but they were all too kind, I wanted to be told 'get a grip and stop yer wingin' that always works for me, instead I felt more sorry for myself so I had to do the tough love bit to myself. I finally got to the line in 4:48mins. I was pleased to have finished, but sorely disappointed with my time - I was gutted. What the hell went wrong? My mantra being 'NEVER AGAIN'.

I went off to find the support crew and find somewhere quiet to lick my wounds and sulk!! There was no hiding, people were everywhere, oddly enough the problems with my legs had now all gone away, I just felt weak and sickly, I needed to sit down, but knew I shouldn't as I'd never get up. A couple of guys made me laugh as they tried to change their clothes without sitting down as they feared the same as me - their bottoms hadn't seen the sunshine for some time - very white!!!

The phone network was busy and OH and child had not appeared at agreed meeting place and I couldn't get close to the tree to lean on while I waited and the thought of eating anything from the goody bag turned my stomach even more - everyone seemed really happy, but I was feeling low and then I spotted my son who gave me a big hug and then complained that I smelt, but he was proud of me, I could've wept, what a lovely thing to say. We went on our way back to the train and I was surprisingly mobile - weird. Got back to the flat to assess the damage to the feet - not a blister, not a bruise, not a black toe nail, no chaffing, nothing - amazing!

I continued with my mantra - NEVER AGAIN to anyone that would listen who would laugh back and say Al, you say this everytime you finish a marathon, yes was my reply, but I really mean it this time - yes they say, you always say that as well!!

Anyway after much sulking and some comforting words from fellow runners I have moved on and I reckon that I know why I had so many problems and I'm absolutely raging with my own stupidity - remember the pink laces that I told you about in the previous blog - the ones I bought at the Expo, the ones that don't need tying ever, the ones that I was so taken with and laced them into my running shoes to run the marathon - well I'm sure that it was because of them, my feet burned up (they were too tight), I must've ran about 14miles before I loosened them off and had been running in a way to take the pressure off where it hurt and as a consequence caused all sorts of problems to my poor legs. The good thing was the bursitis in my foot did not flare up and my ITB problem just wasn't there!!! So my friends prior to a race DO NOT CHANGE A SINGLE THING / ROUTINE / NOTHING. If it aint broke, don't fix it!

A very hard lesson for me and advice that I give out all the time to new runners, why oh why was I so stupid? I won't make that mistake again.

Great race to run, the crowds are great and the organisation is spot on as well and if anyone is reading this who hasn't run a marathon and wants to, this is one to do, but listen, I've done my bit, it's someone elses turn and good luck to them - NEVER AGAIN!

    Are you sitting comfortably

Once upon a time there was a youngish woman who entered the FLM Ballot and low and behold she got a place and her name is Allyson or Ally to everyone except her mother!! Dilligently along with her trusty hound Harvey she followed the 16-week FIRST training plan - it wasn't always easy as Ally has a family, works full time and has a life or so she thought until the training started. The training wasn't without its woes, it rained, it snowed, blizzards blew, there was even a training day when she saw all 4 seasons - this felt like the worst day of all and nearly gave up - but Ally can be quite thrawn (willful) and stuck with her training through the good days and the bad, with visits to the physio for various punishments or to reframe that - treatments!

Now Ally doesn't get out much so heading to the big smoke was quite an adventure and she took a flight with her family from Glasgow - there was a slight delay at the airport which added to the frustr.. no excitement. As the plane was about to land at Gatwick the plane changed direction and zoomed back up into the sky, 'fit a fleg' she got (what a fright). Apparently there was a runway inspection and the flight was diverted to another runway - you would've thought that the pilot would've been made aware of that before the flight almost touched base!  Never mind thought Ally, this all adds to the adventure - she was now in London, England - WOW thought the wee jock fae the north and on she went with her family where security was much tighter and her little boy got searched which gave him a dreadful fright and he thought he was going to get marched away to the cells. Mummy made it better with hugs and reassuring words!

From the airport it was off to catch a train, easier than it sounds. Fortunately Ally had clear instructions from Mark who let her use his flat over the weekend and the only problem was with the Jubilee line which created absolute havoc. Nonetheless the Robb/ Macaulay clan arrived at their destination all excited about the forthcoming adventure to the Expo which was a stonethrow away from the flat.

    Expo

Ally arrived to collect her number and chip to be asked if she'd already collected her package as there were 2 chip numbers against her name. Ally was a wee bit confused - must've been jet lag! She was told to go away and come back in half an hour, so this allowed for time to shop and meet up with Mike who Ally thought looked every inch a marathon runner, trim, toned, fit and enthusiastic.

Having ran the Berlin Marathon a couple of years ago and attended the Berlin Expo which was absolutely jineourmous, Ally was a bit disappointed with the FLM Expo - it fell short of her expectations! Nonetheless she did buy a pair of pink laces for her running shoes which meant that she'd never need to tie her laces again (more about this later).

The number/chip situation got resolved and Ally was mighty pleased with herself, now she was hungry and went to find something healthy and nutritious - there were many eating places within the building, but the food was not great, nonetheless Ally was hungry enough that she could've eaten a scabby horse!

On route back to flat Ally's other half twisted his ankle on uneven ground - nasty! OH hobbled back to flat and the family chilled out for the night in front of the telly while Ally went through her goody bag and started to prepare her kit for Sunday. Plans made for Saturday to go sight seeing.

    Saturday

OH's ankle very bruised, thankfully he's not running the marathon! Off we went to catch a boat to see the sights of London. Ronan only wanted to see Big Ben and indeed he saw BB and photos were taken. Some woman tried to sell Ally heather, funny really as Ally could've taken a bucket load down from Scotland and made a few pennies herself!

It was time for lunch and off the family went to the Rain Forest where they stuffed themselves stupid and then went to see We Will Rock You - the Robb Macaulay clan were rockin in their seats - loved the theme and the music was fab. It Rocked!

It was time for a spot of food shopping for dinner and it was agreed not to divert from the runners normal dietary needs prior to a big run - so it was pasta and the normal trimmings - yummy thought Ally!

Dinner was had, Ally then checked over her running gear and decided that as those pink laces looked so pretty she just had to run with them on Sunday. She wore her Asics with the new laces for a while before bedtime to make sure they were fitted correctly and wouldn't give her any jip on the run - yes another box ticked off. As Ally was going to the startline on her own on Sunday OH gave her instructions on how to get there, detailing the train journey - he was very worried about Ally's ability to not get lost as she doesn't have a map in her head, Ally was very worried too as there was a chance she'd end up in France!! It was time for bed.

    Sunday

The sun was shining - this was not the weather expected where was the clouds, wind and rain!

Ally had a great nights sleep - the best in a long while and got up raring to go. She had her usual breakfast of porridge, banana and honey and off she went clutching her bit of paper with her journey instructions - gulp!

No need to worry while waiting at the DLR there were several runners and one was going Ally's way, so she tagged onto him, this was his first ever marathon and hadn't done all the training that was required due to work committments - never mind Ally thought - ignorance is bliss!!!

The train journey was problematic - at the main station taking all the runners to Blackheath the trains were running late. There must've been hundreds upon hundreds of runners all standing on platform 5 when an anouncement was made to go to platform 4 and then another one came across to go to platform 5 and then again it was back to platform 4 and then 5 and then platform 2. The crowd was becoming aggitated as time was ticking by and it looked like the race would start without everyone. Eventually a train arrived and everyone piled into it, Ally has had a fairly sheltered upbringing and never experienced anything like it. People were quite quiet which Ally found strange so started chatting to everyone around her, after all everyone was so very intimately close, how could they not talk to one another and a bit of banter was had by all and people smiled. When the doors opened it was like a piece of elasticsnapped and everyone pinged out onto the platform and headed to the Red and Blue areas. Ally still had her chaperone and was very greatful for this. He even helped her find the toilet, fortunately she was able to do the rest herself!!  Due to the delay Ally never saw the elite women or wheelchair racers go but she went off to find her place along with the other runners.

To be continued - small child wants on the computer!!
