How is training going?
How is everyone doing? I have to admit, the last thing I want to do when I get home from work now is go out and run from 4-8 miles AND then wake up early on the weekend to run 17-20! But lately it seems that no matter how much I don't want to go out and run, once I do everything seems to be clicking.
My Garmin batteries died tonight and I had no idea how far I had gone or still needed to go. I gave the clock the benefit of the doubt and determined I was running no faster than 10:00 minute miles. When I passed an area I knew was 1.5 miles from home I told myself I'd run 25 more minutes (I still had my cell phone) and then turn around and take the same way home. When I hit that mark I ran home and beat the first 40 minute run by 4 minutes! So that was my exciting run of the week!!
What is everyone doing for their diet?? Are you already cutting back and trying to watch what you eat/drink? Are you going to wait to "clean" your diet up until the last week or so? Let me know!!

Tri_Girl 'Hello Bib808, Congrats on sticking with your training program. The winter months, from time-to- time make it difficult to stay motivated. Because I log most of my training miles on the trails, I use my iPod. Music is a real life-savor. Your diet, at this time, should be clean. Waiting a week before will not enhance your sport performance. As a matter of fact, there are very specific guidelines you should follow the week before your race. Are you practicing your fueling strategy? Stay focused, Stacy' added 26th Mar 2008

Bib808 'Overall, I'd say I eat rather "clean". Breakfast is skim milk with oatmeal or granola bar. Lunch is usually a small serving of beef or pasta with fruit or veggie. I'll have a Triscuits or Wheat things with cheese as snack in the afternoon. During the week, I always dinner after running which is usually a veggie, carb, and protein. I've cut out all soda and limit coffee to 1 cup in the morning. My only vice is the Guinness :-). For the week or two prior to I'll switch the granoloa/oatmeal breakfast to fruit, cut the coffee/alcohol completely, more fruits/veggies, whole-grain carbs at lunch and similar at dinner. And nothing but water to drink. When I do my long weekend runs I'll take a GU and water every 60 minutes or so. Race day I'll drink almost every mile. I don't think cleveland is passing gel out until mile 19 so I'll need to bring a couple with me. Any advice??' added 26th Mar 2008

Tri_Girl 'I am looking into the gel issue, as it should be available before mile 19. Sounds like you have a great start. Here are a few guidelines that will help. Eat frequently throughout the day - every three hours. Make sure you have quality protein available, as with each run you damage muscle tissue and the only way to repair it is with protein. Are you recovering from your runs or feeling sluggish? Are you using a sports drink? Electrolytes are important. You may need more than one gel per hour, but that depends on a few factors. Try one every 30 minutes and see how you feel. Stay focused, Stacy' added 26th Mar 2008

Bib808 'Stacy- thanks for the advice, it is much appreciated! I thought/think mile 19 was awfully late into the marathon for gel. I have the email that was sent by the marathon organization over the weekend. If you want a copy send me an email address to forward it to and I can do just that. I avoid the sport's drinks during the runs and stick to water. i'll usually have close to 20 oz. of gatorade after a run, However, in the race i'll have gatorade for the first two-thirds and then water at the end. I'll try a gel every 30 minutes this weekend on my 18 miler and see how it goes. I think the main reason i've waited every 60 minutes is that i just don't like the hassle of dealing with them while I run,but we'll see how it goes. Again, I appreciate the advice and help! I hope your training is going well! A co-worker is wanting me to do an Aquathon with him this summer which will be my next "big event" to get ready for (run-swim-run). I've got the running down, but the swim is a little intimidating, a 1000m. Are you doing any tri's this summer?' added 27th Mar 2008
