Down . . . But Not Out !!
May1320121:16 a.m.
I've had a terrible week due to all the personal issues I'm having at home, but I'm not going to bore everybody with all the details, along with post marathon knee niggles.
I have desperately been trying to get back into my running as i don't want to lose the fitness, strength and endurance that I've gained during the marathon training. I had planned on entering a couple of 10k's and HM's soon after the marathon to try and set PB's of sub 40 mins and sub 1:30 in those distances, but I've hardly managed to get out and run since the marathon and I can feel my fitness dwindling already.
When I had the focus of the marathon I felt strong and all my personal issues were in the background, but now the marathon is done I can feel everything else taking over me and I feel really run down. I'm usaully such a strong person and for me to feel like this is very unusual. My family are concerned, but I just want to put a brave face on all this so the kids don't notice anyting is wrong with their Daddy.
Today I went for a run with the kids riding their bikes with me. I stupidly asked them if they thought they could keep up with me, which just spurred my youngest (Kieran) on to ride as fast as he could. Ben just rode at my pace which was nice and we had a good chat for the whole 4 miles. Kieran just sped off and I found myself doing a few unplanned intervals to catch him up to warn him of roads that were coming up.
As much as i would like to set 10K and HM PB's this year I think i will set myself just one final running challenge this year of the Great South Run. I have never run or trained for a 10 mile event before, so if I get chance I'll do that and at the same time hopefully get to meet up with some valued online RelBuzzer friends for the first time.
Tonight I've been out at a friends house where we had a good chat and relaxed in a hot tub drinking wine. One of the guys I was with is an IT guru and he managed to sort out my laptop which has been dead for a couple of days, hence why I'm able to write this tonight.
Happy running everyone, and catch up again soon.
Dave xxxx

reenee_62 'Hey you, very glad you got out for a run, and with the kiddies too! 4 miles not bad. I bet littl'en slept like a log after that. Really hope your knee gets seen to or makes progress on its own soon. Looking forward to the great south run. Keep strong and keep your chin up, and I say this to every friend in trouble, but you want me to beat her up for ya? lol, it wont work as im small but i take a swing anyhow. I dont know much about the system you'll be going through but a friend of mine recently was granted custody of his little girl, so i'll do my best at understanding. ' added 13th May 2012

Rob_Barber 'After the hard long slog of all that marathon training, not to mention the trauma the body endures in the 26.2 miles itself, it is natural and right to take a bit of a breather afterwards. The body needs time to repair, the mind time to refresh. Seem to be quite afew people on here, and I'm afraid to say you're sounding like one of them, that are expecting a little bit too much post marathon. Let yourself recover, your strong comeback will come. Push on when the body wants to recuperate, and you end up feeling flat. I think you know what to do.' added 13th May 2012

Mrs_Old_Bird 'Hey Dave, look after yourself, first and foremost. You'll be as much use as a roof rack on a bicycle if it all falls apart! You are being a brill dad with your boys, they're lucky to have you, and if you can pass your love of keeping fit on to them, all the better. You have trained for the marathon, so you know that your levels of fitness will get better, even if it doesn't happen overnight. Good luck with the Great South Run, I did it in 2002 but I think it is now one of the biggest 10 milers around, so prepare for crowds! That's a bit decadent, drinking wine in a hot tub! I'd be guaranteed to get squiffy and end up unintionally submerged and make a complete show of myself!! No wonder my poor husband despairs of me at times!! Take it easy, take one day at a time, and remember you've got lots of friends on here! Kay x' added 13th May 2012
