Training progressing, albeit with a few niggles

As the title says really.  Wanted to go for a 6 miler last Sunday, trying to push my mileage up a little bit now.  So, we headed over to Salcy Forest, complete with kids, bikes, husband and mother in law.  The plan was for eldest daughter on bike to accompany me round the 6 mile trail, whilst the rest of the family meandered in ever decreasing circles.  However, eldest daughter has only just got a new mountain bike, and isn't used to riding through the amounts of mud we encountered.  When I uploaded the results there was about 20 stops whilst I waited for her, or she sorted out her coat, t-shirt or whatever other excuse there was.  In the end we took a short cut down the bike trail so it ended up being about 5 miles, taking us about 90 minutes, but the Garmin said the pace when I was running averaged at just under 10 min miles which wasn't too bad given terrian and circs etc.

I did a 4 mile run Tuesday Morning, nice now the weather is getting better, splits as follows

  1. 10 min 19
  2. 9 min 24
  3. 8 min 59
  4. 8 min 48

Wednesday I went to a running club for the first time!!  Joined in with the Silson runners where we did some circuits, 3/4 at fast pace, then 1/4 gentle jog.  5 of them finishing with a 1/4 walk then another 5.  I slotted in nicely behind a guy who seemed to be doing the pace I wanted at this stage.  I forgot my garmin so can't tell you what I did, but I can say without any shadow of doubt that I was well and truly knackered when done!

Friday I did a 6 mile run when I finished work, just a gentle one trying to push up the distance.  It was quite nice running conditions, a light drizzle for some of it.  I'd never run round there and it was a bit hillier than I expected it.  Splits as follows :

  1. 9 min 49
  2. 9 min 27
  3. 9 min 45
  4. 9 min 31
  5. 9 min 49
  6. 9 min 18 (Homeword Stretch!)

Lastly today I went and did some hill reps as is specified by the training plan I'm working on currently.  12 x 1 min runs up a gentle hill, each one followed by a walk back down to the bottom.  I ran to and back from the hill, and it worked out at 4.6 miles.  Really good session, felt it's worked me harder than I expected.

So, all in all, enjoying being back in the swing of it, BUT!  What has happened to my shoes first and foremost.  Before injury they were the best and most comfortable trainers I've ever had.  Now they're really rubbing in the bottom of my big toe :((  I can't really afford any more atm and I don't get what has changed.

Secondly, I'm trying to get so that I can beat my pb on my 10k time, so I'm following a training plan, but it calls for 6 runs a week.  I don't think I can do that with work and family.  I was thinking more of 4 times a week with some x training in between.  My ultimate goal is a marathon, I'm hoping that would be sufficient for training for that also?

For the moment, Stanwick 10k on Easter Monday is my current goal, and my daughters are doing the 2k.  Can't wait!!

Out for a 90 minute steady run hopefully tomorrow.  Catch you all Laters x

  • Way_Too_Slow 'Have a look at the Furman Institute (FIRST) schedules. They are all based on 3 runs a week with a bit of cross-training on the other days. I've followed them for the GNR, FLM last year and and using an adaption of it for this years marathon. They also do a 10k schedule. The sessions can be quite hard as they are very specific and there are no "junk" miles (miles just for the sake of it), but have a look and see what you think.' added 14th Mar 2010

  • Ells_Bells 'Thanks wts - looking at that now - seems just what I'm after. Will take a good look and see if I can start planning. I can't find the one that I used for my 1/2 which worked really well, but FIRST looks very interesting. I am embarressed to say that I didn't run today :( I went for a walk with the family instead. I had no idea that hill reps did that to you!! My a8rse particularly is in agony!! I've given it a rest today, and will be back training tomorrow! Ells' added 14th Mar 2010

  • Muffs 'Glad you're back in the swing of things. It strange how trainers can suddenly change to be no good for you. You may find that the problems stop when you get back into th same pace as you were before,' added 14th Mar 2010

  • Ells_Bells 'Just looking at it now, I think the only problem is going to be working out the paces. My pb for a 5k is 24min 40secs, and the website only does 30-40 min paces, so I'll have to get the book. Although, I know I couldn't run it that fast atm!' added 14th Mar 2010
