Beginners nerves...

Mar31201011:54 a.m.

Did what I hope will be one of my final training runs in the gym before work this morning - I would happily NEVER run on a treadmill again after the marathon is over (as well as occasionally plotting in darker moments to BURN my trainers...) - I have developed an irrational loathing for treadmills.  I was trying to do Fartlek training as advised by my sports massage chappie last night - not sure how well I did at it but it definitely knackered me out doing a few 'sprints', so hopefully it was good for me.  Plan to only run outside from now on though - no matter how miserable the weather - it just gives you a much better sense of well-being and is so much less boring.  Been really focusing on my stretches after each run too as it genuinely does seem to make a huge difference (just so time consuming!!  you need to add an extra twenty mins to each run to get through them all!).

As I near the 'peak' of training this weekend, the nerves are really kicking in!!!  A lot of the beginners training plans do say to 'peak' at 18 or so miles so I'm sticking with that advice, but the prospect of casually tacking on another 8 on the day is quite terrifying! Is that REALLY possible!?

I'm really pleased to have managed to raise nearly £2500 for my charity, Mind.  I've now actually started another fundraising page for Marie Curie in light of my training partner and very close friend having been diagnosed with cancer again and have raised £500 so far and going strong. My friend has had the first operation to remove three lymph tumours and we're praying they got rid of the majority of the cancer cells.  As she looks towards months of chemotherapy ahead, I'm again reminded how lucky I am to be able to take part in the marathon.  Nerves or no nerves I'm going to do everything possible to enjoy the day.

Good luck to everyone out there as they approach their final LSR this weekend! Kiss

Your skin is waterproof and your kit will dry! It's only a bit of rain - don't let it stop you!! Don't worry about the extra miles on the day. If you can do 18-20 in training, the crowd, atmosphere and adrenaline will get you through the rest. The more long runs you have done the easier it will be, but I'm sure you'll be fine. DON'T do too much now though, you won't get any benefit from pushing things at this stage. Fingers crossed your friends operation has been successful. Do it for her!! Well done on the fundraising but one final tip, update your Overview with your charity page addresses to make it easy for potential sponsors. If it's easy you might raise more money! • glen_b 'Superb efforts on the fundraising, I am lucky in not having a minimum amount, but hope to get to 4 figures with a bit of a push!! I would get out on the roads now, as WTS says above, it may not be nice out there at this moment, but on the day we will have to run whatever the conditions!' added 1st Apr 2010
