New York, New York!

ING New York Marathon

Last Sunday the ‘Big Apple’ witnessed two entertaining races. Meb Keflezighi beat a big field and became the first American winner since 1982! If you enjoy your satire you might enjoy this piece from ‘The Onion’ who runs with the following headline and a quite amusing photo.

“New York Marathon Winner Tests Positive For Performance-Enhancing Horse”

There was another article that I assumed was a joke but, was actually meant to be a serious point. This article compared Meb, an American Citizen born in Eritrea, to a “ringer who you hire to work a couple hours at your office so that you can win the executive softball league”. This sparked a very serious debate in the media about race and citizenship. Read the article yourself and let me know if this guy has a point or is completely wrong.

There was bad news for Britain’s Paula Radcliffe who faded in the latter part of the race. Fourth place apparently gave the British press the green light to jump on Paula’s back and make ridiculous claims that she has disgraced herself and should retire. I was however pleased to find at least one writer out there who has hit back and defended Britain’s greatest ever distance runner.

Read this article (from the Times) and let me know what you think of Paula and the Press! Does she deserve the bad press from having an average run?

Video time

If you do not wish to go back to work just yet then maybe this video of Usain Bolt learning some new dance moves will entertain you a little longer!

That Bolt might be better than me at sprinting but, if he went toe to tow with me in a 'Dance Off' i'd have him for dinner! He is can have as many 'two-step' moves as he wants but he is nothing until he can truly master the 'one-step hop!'

Let me know what you think  about Paula in the new Poll (left hand side) and leave me a comment below!

I don't know Footnote that boy can seriously move!

It is the British tradition to build someone up and then knock them down. The times article makes an interesting point about other male celebrities who have cried.
Also I have never thought about the difference between sports that athletes have many chances to win major tournaments and Olympic sports that have a chance once in 4 years!

While I admire Paula's guts for running in NYC, you have to wonder, given her recent injury record whether it was wise for her to run knowing that she had a tendonitis problem. Just about anyone else in the world, apart from Paula, would be happy with a 4th place finish in New York.
Sadly, people love to knock her, but the girl is the best distance runner we've ever had and people will only ever appreciate what she has achieved when she's retired. Let's hope that Paula goes out with a glorious finish in 2012.

As great as she has been, it's really time for her to call it a day. Surely her body is telling her it's time to quit, and with injury after injury she must really feel that too but is ignoring the obvious. I hope she proves everyone wrong, but I just can't see a fully fit Paula Radcliffe turning out in London 2012. Go home and enjoy your kids growing up Paula.

I forgot to mention she is now planning to have another kid before 2012.

I never knew having kids was performance enhancing......
haha

By the way, the winner of the men's race was about as American as Kevin Pieterson is English.

Sorry father but i disagree. Meb did all his running in america compared to Kevin who was already an established cricketer.

Q- Does that make a difference father?

If you can ignore the annoying 30 second video here is more info on Meb.

But many of the Europeans do most of their training at altitude in Africa - that doesn't make them all Africans does it?
At the end of the day, great performance by Meb whichever country was on his vest

I meant he did all his running as an american citizen not what roads he was running on. I think it is a very good debate and but it probably all comes down to is how you as a person defines a citizen.

I was in a bar last week when an american got ridiculously animated when someone said she was not irish as she had claimed. I think it's all about whether you think someone who was not actually born in your country should be allowed to represent that country.

Britain's Mo Farah was born in Somalia but he is definitely British to me because i grew up with him. In 300 years I think the world will look back at all our arguments about race and nationalities and say what the hell were they on about! haha

It’s a hard one as I suppose individuals do have an advantage geographically, but where do you draw the line. I mean in a ski competition you don’t penalise the Swiss because they have better access to snow do you?
