And the winner is.................
The race Director of the Lakefront Marathon (Milwaukee, Wisconsin) created quite a stir this week by disqualifying the first two female athletes from last weekend’s race. The fastest runner, Cassie Peller, was disqualified for accepting a water bottle from a friend which is against the rules because it was ‘outside Official Water Stations’.
Two days later a photograph of the newly crowned winner Jennifer Goebel was posted in a running forum (discussing the first disqualification), showed that she had an iPod tucked into her shorts. When questioned, Jennifer admitted using the iPod for two miles near the end of the race which is against USA Road Racing Rules!
“If you’re bored, it pumps you up a little bit. If they’re going to disqualify me for having an iPod they should disqualify everyone who had one!” claimed the first person ever to be disqualified for the iPod ruling.

2nd place/ 2nd winner with incriminating photo (ipod circled)
Assuming this is the last DQ, the victory will fall to Corina Canitz, a 42 year old mother of four, unless having four children is also against the rules! I will just check...............

Ban them all........ Especially this 81 year old!
If you think the above story was crazy try this:
The U.S Marathon Record holder for the 80-84 age group was disqualified from the Medtronic Twin Cities Marathon last weekend for what I can only describe as ‘Performance Enhancing Urination’!

Jerry Johncock (no, the surname is legit!), badly needed to urinate, but could not force anything out. Having experienced bladder problems before Jerry knew that a good old catheter would get rid of a blood clot in his uretha but, an Aid station did not have one at hand.
Johncock’s luck changed when a spectator over heard the conversation and offered him his catheter he had in his car! Jerry was able to use it himself and noted “What a relief that was. I must have had a pint of urine inside me”!

Once race officials heard of this they considered disqualifying Johncock because some would class this as ‘improper assistance’, USATF Rule 144.3(d)! Luckily for Jerry, the Race Director decided against this and heralded the 81 year old as “a great role model and example of what you can do as a runner!” John finished in 5 hours 22 minutes!

Races to look out for this weekend...............
Bank of America Chicago Marathon
The penultimate World Marathon Majors race of the year, kicks off on Sunday morning in Chicago. Olympic Champion Sammy Wanjiru thinks he will have to run 2 hours 4 minutes to win the race whilst, current London Marathon champ Irina Mikitenko of Germany is hoping to win another World Marathon Majors title. Both are currently standing high at the top of the rankings!

IAAF World Half Marathon Championship’s on Sunday in Birmingham
For the first time since the last time the IAAF World Half Marathon Championships were held in the UK, in 2001, Great Britain & Northern Ireland will be represented by full teams in this Sunday’s EDF Energy World Half Marathon Championships in Birmingham, 11 October. The British womens team will be without race favourite Paula Radcliffe who withdrew with tonsilitis!
Sadly it will also be the first time in 40 years that the BBC has not covered a major athletics event when it is staged in the UK. You can however watch the race live on Sky Sports 2 from 8.30am or online at www.universalsports.com.

Some crazy stories out there. Good luck to all those racing this weekend in Chicago and the rest of the world. Make sure you learn from others mistakes and dont get a drink from a friend, carry an ipod or use a catheter!
