Weekend Action

Hello again, just a quick update (and a moan) from running related activities this past weekend.

Never too old to quit!

Britons Hayley Yelling caused a big upset at the European Cross-country Championships in Dublin this weekend. Yelling had previously won the event in 2004 so her talent was known but what made this victory such a shock was that Hayley has just come out of a year-long retirement.

"I was running scared. I didn't know where they were or how far behind. I thought they might have a quick last lap."

Well they didn’t and the 35 year old collected her second European title.

Mo's Silver makes him Dizzy!

On the men’s side Britain’s Mo Farah received his Silver medal in the medical tent after ‘passing out’ at the finish line. Mo ran himself into the ground and not only managed to beat eight-time European Champ Sergiy Lebid but helped the men’s team achieve a Silver Team medal. The future looks bright as the under-23 men and women took home the team prizes. For a the Video of the race click here

I spoke to Mo this morning and he is fine. He apparently pushed himself a little too far!

Athletes lose at the BBC sports personality of the year.

Phillips Idowu and Jessica Ennis might be the best in the world but, lost out to veteran Manchester United star Ryan Giggs. Usain Bolt might need a bigger mantelpiece as he received the Overseas award.

"My vote for a Welsh personality would have been a Leek over a Gigg’s. Nice person and good ambassador but hardly a personality. There was a big debate over Gigg’s receiving ‘footballer of the season’ let alone being the best of British sport. It looks as though they also got the ‘Overseas Personality’ of the year wrong. As much as I love ‘the Bolt’ maybe it should have gone too Tiger Woods. No one would have ever guessed Tiger had one but, if his girlfriends had voted he would have been streets ahead!"

What’s your opinion on the awards? Should Gigg’s have got it or was this a farce?

Everyone's an expert and that's what you get when you do public votes. Personally I think public votes are a waste of time because they tend to reflect the now rather than what is actually right. I remember all the public votes relating to best album around the Millenium and most on the list you won't open your curtains to if they were playing in your back garden...

But what do you expect? Having a popular player who has been so consistent for so long combined with being a player at the world's biggest football club - what do you expect? He deserved it - it's never been about personality has it really - Mansell, Faldo?? It's about achievement over the last twelve months although if it was about personality and achivement then where was Wiggins who gave more in June than most in a lifetime...

Ennis should have won because she would have given such a positive message about how much we really love and value sport in the UK - survivor, winner, a woman. But we should be expecting athletes to do more and be on the list, they get a lot of funding compared to the past and we want to see success and results...

Easy to pick Giggs' personality - he's a normal bloke but happens to be the most important player of the past decade, millionaire, skillful - he is shy and he keeps himself to himself rather than being in the press - like Gerrard but more medals...

Can't wait for Scholes to win at the next one...
