Starting from Scratch

Yesterday I managed my first run since 25 June, to say I was excited was an understatement. After having my pelvis put back into alignment and a trapped nerve released I had to return to the physio in July as I had another trapped nerve and this one was stubborn. The piriformis muscle in my right buttock had gripped hold of the sciatic nerve and no matter what I did was it going to let go. Walking more than 100 yards resulted in pain all down my leg to the ankle, running was out of the question. Eventually acupuncture and extensive stretching worked and after two sessions of needle poking I was allowed to go for a run by the physio. He did set 104 restrictionsand I only ignored 101of them. However I did not push myself, I did not go too fast and I did stretch like a madman afterwards so I think he will not be too unhappy.
What to say really. It was fantastic just to get out there again. I managed a whole 2 miles in 19 minutes in teeming rain and the first mile was painful as my backside ached so much, there was a couple of times I checked to make sure it was not just about to fall off. I huffed and puffed like a smoker with a 40 a day habit - how soon do you lose the fitness - but I had a huge soppy grin on my face all the way round and splashed through the puddles like a 3 year old. By the end my bum had resigned itself to the work out and had stopped complaining. This morning I woke up as stiff as a board but after a bit of a stretch I was OK.
And the really good news is I can go again tomorrow!!!! I report back to the physio on September 6 so he can give me a final once over before being released back into the world of the wannabe athlete. So no more grumpy me, no more wistfully looking at other runners and where is that Sweatshop Autumn catalogue, I feel like some new kit to celebrate.
Life is GRRRRREATTTTTT!

eclipse 'Great news, well done on getting back out there, I am wondering if I have another trapped nerve as I am having issues with my lower left buttock just where the hamstring conects. Hope it all goes well. Tel' added 29th Aug 2010
