Well its 31st December 2006 and time for a little reflection. 2006 will go down as one of the best years of my life. This time last year the thought of running a marathon seemed impossible, although I had a place in London I was struggling with injury and did not run at all in January. My training leading up to London was hardly textbook but I got going after a fashion in February and still recall how hard my first Half marathon at Liverpool in March. The longest run I managed before London was 18 miles. But that day, 22nd April was one of the best and most amazing experiences ever. I still remember the pain and how hard the last six miles were but the feeling when I crossed the finishing and met up with Sarah and the children made me feel so proud and determined that I would run another marathon.

In May I joined the Wrekin Road Runners Club and a whole new world opened up, through the club I have met some amazing people and enjoyed some good social events, as well as running in more races than I knew existed. I have run 16 races in 2006, including 3 half marathons, the highlight however must be the ING New York Marathon on 5th November, the sights and sounds of that day will stay with me forever and the medal is one of my most prized possessions (along with the London medal of course). 2006 has proved to me that I can run a marathon and that I can do things I could only ever dream of achieving if I put my mind to it.

Running the two marathons has also really restored my faith in people, from the camaraderie amongst the runners to the encouragement and support of the crowds, the kids wanting to high five me, people offering me food and drink and complete strangers shouting out my name. The saddest thing about running these marathons is that I will never see all those amazing people again.

Anyway since my last blog I have continued to run, including a gentle 3 miles on Christmas day, a 10-mile run on Christmas eve and just short of 9 miles on Friday. Sarah has been doing lots of these runs with me, it is great to have her along for company she is doing really well.

2006 has also introduced me to the world of blogging, I have met some great people as a result of blogging on realbuzz and hope to meet many of them again and many more of you in the future. Please keep posting to your bloggs and adding comments to my posts.

After my 3 miles yesterday I reached 1310 miles in the year which I worked out is equivalent to exactly 50 marathons, not bad eh?

2007 is going to start with a 10K race in Hereford. I wonder if the new year can live up to 2006.

    Happy New Year to everyone.

Anyway, what I was saying when a rogue key-stroke so rudely interrupted was that I totally agree with you on how inspiring running a marathon can be. Like you, I did two in 2006 and intend to carry on for the forseeable future. Happy New Year to you too!' added 3rd Jan 2007
