To Infinity AND Beyond

A new challenge is what I needed and that’s what I have signed up for. I intend to use the VLM as a warm up race for my big challenge of 2010 – the Comrades Marathon in South Africa at the end of May.

Brief recap as to how I got here – started running two and a half years ago, have three marathons under my belt and a host of halfs and a few 10km. Really enjoy running and the last few months have seen a great improvement.

Have not always been a runner and didnt do any exercise for the best part of twenty years before I started running – but firmly believe we can all do anything if we work hard at it and believe in ourselves.

So the next six months or so will see me building up the mileage so that I can face the self styled “ultimate human race” – full details here...

Day off.....work not running

Had a day off work today - partly to use up annual leave (we get too much but dont tell the boss) and partly cos I felt like one. So in typical fashion I had a list of jobs to do including fixing lights, goingto Ikea hanging hooks and other bits and bobs that never seem to get done in normal time.

But before all that went to gym....now I know I could have run outside today but wanted to do a weights session and anyway there is a saunda at the gym and as yet my DiY skills dont extend to putting in one of those at home. So did 10 miles on the old treadmill at 6:52 pace - I find it very easy to totally zone out on the old treddie....far easier than outside as outside there is so much to see and take notice off. But in the gym I can just lose myself. So 68 and a bits minutes running.

After that I popped onto the treadclimber machine. This ones odd - two separate treadmills type tracks that rise and fall with each step. Speed is limited to 6.4km/h but as its upp uphill its supposed to be good for you. Did 30 minutes off that and apparently it burnt off 400 caloriies so must have done me some good?

After that it was half an hour or so in sauna and steam room...with some chilling in between before off to do chores.

Run with mate the other night went well. He managed I think 8 or 9 3 minute runs with 1 minute walking inbetween. So did well to cover about 2.5 miles in total. Will go out again next week sometime. I did another mile or so getting there or back so a useful loosener.

Off to the footy this evening - no great hopes for a result as not sure Southend United have  a full team - better take my boots! Then its the dreaded 11+ (well the first of two) tomorrow for daughter - we have totally underplayed this deliberately so she is not stressed about it - unless they have been winding each other up all day at school. there sgot to be a better way?

Hope all is well in your worlds.

Ah the joys of the 11+. I didn't realise it was still in operation in many LEA's. Maybe it would be better to just have the kids do a sack race to decide who gets in?

You like the dreadmill? Blimey, I hate it. So boring!
Anyway, that sounds like some session in the gym.
The very best of luck to your daughter.

Not sure whats worse, Ikea or treadmill running!! Sounds like a good workout there, and some really good training over the past week or so. Fingers crossed tonight, not sure where Southend are heading though!!

Goosd session in the gym, Keith. I hope Southend perform as well!
I remember doing my 11+. I guess it's a better system then having parents lie and cheat to get their kids into the good schools.

Crikey you put me to shame, that's what you call a day off!?! I am a real gymaphobe - the great outdoors is more my cup of tea, but I am sure the gym gives you a more rounded workout and a change is as good as a rest!

Gosh children taking 11+. That takes me back a bit - the last time was 4 years ago - but I do remember how stressful it was for everyone. I hope it all goes well for your daughter.

Now you're just showing off - 10 miles in 68 minutes?!
All the best for the daughter tomorrow. When we considered moving schools for our son he had to take an entrance test at the tender age of 7 (!) but we totally underplayed it too. Turned out he was offered a place but we decided not to take it up in the end. Definitely saw some stressed out parents and kids on the day though!!

Didn't realize the 11+ still existed. Does it still have the same subjects? I remember (back in prehistoric 1965!) we had mental arithmetic, 'mechanical arithmetic' (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division), English, and something else, can't remember what it was called, but was like puzzles: 'Which is the odd one out in this list?'; 'What is the next number in this sequence?' type of thing. We had special books to practise all these, blue and brown (the 2 sorts of arithmetic), purple (English), and green, I think. Probably it's completely different now. I hope it goes okay for her.
