Some sweet treat

Remember the 10p mix? Well, a few retro sweets are poised to make a comeback. After a survey to find Britain's favourite childhood sweet was so successful, Waitrose is set to put three old-fashioned sweets back on the shelves.

Yup, aniseed balls, sherbet pips and chocolate mice will be back to buy in January. But, bit of a change to the balls though; white instead of red.  The reason for the colour switch is that the 'new aniseed balls are made using no artificial colours or flavourings, as is all Waitrose confectionery'.

Retro Shrimp Sweets

Um, don't really get that, the rest of the sweet isn't exactly unprocessed is it? And what about cochineal - that's red isn't it, and from a beetle, you don't get much more natural and organic than that?

Now it surprises me that aniseed balls topped the list of candy for connoisseurs. Weird that, they would have to be my least favourite - the only benefit for me was that I could make one last for ages to wind up my brother.

But here's the top 10 of the nation's favourite sweet and sugary treats.

  • 1. Aniseed Balls
  • 2. Shrimps
  • 3. Sherbet pips
  • 4. Lemon Bon Bons
  • 5. Chocolate mice
  • 6. Sweet Peanuts
  • 7. Strawberry Bon Bons
  • 8. Liquorice Torpedoes
  • 9. Toffee Bon Bons
  • 10. Foam Bananas

But obviously Waitrose fudged it (sorry), I believe the shrimp is clearly the nation's favourite but that would have posed a slight issue. I mean, there's no way they could deliver an artificial colour and flavour-free shrimp, it would look like an ear, and probably taste like one.

Here's my perfect bag...,
Foam Banana, Shrimp, White chocolate mouse, Pint pot,  Black Jack, Cherry lips, a Foiled Ice Cup, Cola bottle, Coconut mushroom and, of course, the obligatory, two-for-penny teds.

  • Kirstie_McIntosh 'Yup, Jelly Bears, those are the ones and I'll have to try the sour cherries, they sound good. Eating a Fox's Glacier mint at the mo - one from Dan's stash.' added 30th Oct 2009

  • Johnf 'The old jars with screw tops, and especially if they sell in 1/4s (lbs that is) and put them in white bags and then flip it over to sort of tie the top, all so reminds me of being a kid and begging for a treat! Then the clip round the ear does similar as well I suppose! As a kid I also loved black jacks and fruit salads because you got 4 for 1d (old penny)!' added 30th Oct 2009

  • GoneFishin 'oooooh yum, Aniseed Balls are my absolute favourite sweet, there are so few proper sweetshops. They need to make a comeback, saves me trawling 13 miles to the overpriced pick n mix stalls that sell them!! ' added 1st Nov 2009
