Soup or Big Mac - which is the healthiest?

A bowl of steaming soup is widely thought to be the healthier of the two - after all how bad can a pulp of veggies and stock really be? But recent nutritional research shows that a bowl of hot broth can be a real bad boy when it comes to upping your salt intake.

Yup, Consensus Action on Salt and Health (Cash) (Phew - that's a mouthful) said 25% of 575 types of soup it analysed failed to meet Food Standards Agency targets on salt content. To put the stats into context, I'll pick one that was tested as a little example, one portion of  Thai green chicken curry soup contained 8.07g of salt, which is the same as nearly three Big Macs with fries.

But, really we shouldn't be strangers to the hidden demon of salt, we know packet sarnies can be shockers when you check out the nutritional stats. For example a typical Ploughman's can contain 13.7g saturated fat, that's over 50% more than a Big Mac. And some sandwiches boast similar salt levels to that of 18 packets of crisps.

Now, don't get me wrong this is not licence to ditch the soups and sarnies and bag burger instead. It's just a heads up that if soups ands packet sandwiches have been a part of your healthy active living routine - you might want to check the nutritional analysis the next time you grab your lunch. Or just make your own, let's face it homemade is always best hey? Here are two of my favourite Kate Percy specials.

Fragrant Thai hot and sour prawn soup

Chickpea and flageolet bean soup

But I can't leave you without a little mention of a few other dirty culprits found lurking in packet sandwiches far worse than salt or fat. A ploughman's sandwich from one well-known supermarket chain was found to contain a condom (unwrapped) hidden between the lettuce and tomato. I mean every little helps is a good sentiment but birth control in your sarnie is just a step too far (plus the fact it wasn't a deep fill).
