1st blog of 2010!
Jan09201012:45 a.m.
Oh dear I have been a dreadful blogger and this is my first one for 2010! So Happy New Year to all you buzzers out there. I guess as I don’t have the importance of the VLM to train for the motivation is just not there to blog every run – but I love hearing all you VLM’ers news of runs – so keep up the good hard work guys you’re all doing so well.
I have been running with my ladies, the best run came just before Christmas with a 4 mile non stop run, which was great for them, the looks on their faces when they realised they had not stopped and my pointing out how quickly they all now recover was just great.
However, things have gone downhill slightly! We did get snow just before Christmas, which scuppered our right up to Christmas Eve planned runs. Over Christmas, it was hard to get anyone motivated and I’m ashamed to say when no one else went, I thought oh buggar it and put my feet up.
New Years Day I persuaded one to go out, but it was black ice we were slipping all over the place and she was terrified she would fall and break something, so we abandoned run.
The snow has now been falling and it’s pretty bad, so again ladies have no motivation. I can understand it, they don’t have anything to train for and I’m relieved I don’t, I think I would be panicking a bit now, this is really not good for you guys training, but where there’s a will, you are all proving there’s a way…..
So I was working Tuesday when it was icy and my car got stuck in ice and I had to get pushed off the particular car park I was stuck on (by 3 handsome young men – no complaints’ there then). Wednesday it snowed more and my zafira (now named Todd Carty) struggled to get into the works car park or do any speed up hills – how I miss my Corsa, which used to tackle snowy hills with gusto, I decided on Thursday I would run into work!
Pulled on my gear, threw my work clothes in a ruck sack and set off. Oh boy, the paths were a good 4” in fluffy snow and it was hard work. By the time I got to the bottom of the road, I was bleeding knackered. On the main roads the cars were crawling along. The only thing which kept me going was the thought of the humiliation if there was someone I knew in a car who might see me walk or a car overtaking me! So I pressed on. The only annoying thing was walkers. Did they not think I was seriously running as they wouldn’t get out of my way! So I ended up having to slow down before yelling “excuse me”, when all I wanted to do was swipe them around the head.
I got plenty of looks, you can almost read peoples minds “what is she doing” “why on earth is she dressed like that” “is she running, or going to work, or just out for the hell of it” I also got a few “blumin heck love, that’s a bit enthusiastic” comments. But hey the last bit of my run was down hill and I took off leaving people literally eating my snow. It was blood great belting down the path, overtaking cars which were desperately going slow because if they put their brakes on they would have just slid to the bottom anyway. The old trainers stuck to the snow with not a skid in sight. I rounded the corner and belted past our shocked facilities manger who was desperately shovelling snow whilst the caretaker slung salt down to allow the queue of cars waiting to get on the car park. Boy did I feel good.
Got to my desk to the bemused look of my local authority buddies. You know the sort, they just think “wow that’s a new look for the office” when you turn up in a pair of running tights, a hat and bright red top, with VLM rejection jacket tied around waist. One girl said “did you walk in like me” I just said “no I ran in actually”.
I did spend the whole day frozen. I forgot how much heat you loose and changing in freezing ladies loo’s didn’t help my cause. Then the realisation that I was gong to have to run home and it was all up hill hit me…….. Oh boy did the day drag.
But hey, no choice, ran home. The up hill was a bit hard and I did have to walk a bit on account of my legs feeling like lead. But once at the top of the hill I hit it and went as fast as I could. Unfortunately coming home there were lots of icy puddles and my feet got very wet and cold (they were totally dry when I got to work) but hey I had a nice hot bath when I got in and felt bloody good for it.
Since then I had Friday off but ran with the kids in tow on their sledges. Probably will have to trot down to the supermarket today as we’ve had another pile land on us overnight.
And hopefully, if my poor little postie is working today Hannah Waterman will arrive through the door. I’m not usually an exercise DVD kind of person – not since that Cher one, where I wanted to punch the TV and her square on the nose and have had an utter dislike for the woman ever since! Let’s hope I get along better with Hannah eh!
And again, well done all you VLM,ers, I don’t know what I would have done if this had happened last year (apart from taken to my shed and had relentless abuse from Rudders and Nick), I did do one or 2 snow runs, but not like this, so you can all have a gold star on me.
