First scuba session - Part 1

Scuba diving's great.

We (there were six of us) went to the first session last night, which involved a talk and video for two hours followed by an hour in the pool.

Here's the pack we received for the course:

Once we'd filled in our forms and disclaimers etc, Stewart Tattersall - the instructor at Dee Sports - talked us through the basics of scuba diving, including how pressure affects you when you're diving, and gave a demonstration using a scuba tank. He also told us one or two horror stories about exploding lungs and eardrums, but we all laughed this off...

After the video and talk had finished we chose our fins and BCDs (buoyancy control devices) and set off for the baths in Chester to scuba dive for the first time...

  • pcable 'You would be better not to laugh off the " horror stories". Exploding lungs and perforated eardrums are injuries which are most likely to affect people who have not taken their training seriously. Scuba diving, while being one of the most fascinating of leisure activities, takes place in a hostile environment and fatalities can occur through not following advice given in basic instuction. Enjoy' added 15th May 2007

  • MarkS 'Hi pc.able, We actually took it seriously - I very much understand the dangers of diving incorrectly, even after just the first session. Read my next blog post for evidence! By the way are you a diving instructor or do you have lots of experience of scuba diving? If you have any other tips or advice please let me know.' added 15th May 2007

  • pcable 'Hi Mark Glad you are taking it seriously. I am a qualified BSAC instructor with lots of diving experience although I don't dive much any more. An age thing. The best advice i can give is to listen to your instructor. Take it slowly and make sure you enjoy every moment of it. There are so many sights waiting for you below the surface. Life's a beach and then you dive.' added 15th May 2007

  • MarkS 'Thanks. The instructors were patient and told us to take our time - it's good to be in that kind of environment, especially when you're not a naturally great swimmer. I'm also looking forward to the open water dives, but there's a way to go yet...' added 15th May 2007
