HOG ROAST !
May1920087:53 p.m.
I think I may well have come last in the race to post my GMR report ! But better late than never I suppose and I'll try and keep it brief !
Got on a packed tram into town which was buzzing with anticipation. In town for 09:00 and no sooner had I got off and started making my way to the GMEX I bumped into the Realbuzz gang - and of course big man hugs from Jamie B - I think it's a Skylon thing !
Met up with the Meningitis UK guys and chilled out. Along came mother and father H and out came Monty Pig ! Got dressed and immediately felt a little warm ! Loads of smiles and cheers from everyone helped me relax though !
As we were just getting to the start line who should be there following me but more Realbuzzers ! It's always nice to start a race with Mother H and I know she does get nervous despite her race experience ! Waiting at the White start wave was also the first time I properly put on the Monty Pig hood and realised how warm it was and how very little I could see. My vision was limited to directly in front and down so I was a little worried about falling over in the busy start.
All went fine - I set off too quickly not really appreciating how warm I would get ! Managed to get to 3 KM and decided I had to breathe so perched Monty's head on top of mine. My hands were also getting sweaty and I thought the last thing I want is to drop the ball I was carrying ! Finally up Bridgewater Way and around OT. Made it to 5KM in one piece but desperately hot and dehydrated already. I was drenched with sweat and didn't feel great so had a little walk to get fluids on board. Through the quays and to the 7KM water point where I needed another walk to cool off and get the fluids in.
From here it was a real struggle and quite possiby the toughest 10 KM I have EVER ran. I once again found myself walking at around 8KM for a minute but the crowd were still great cheering me on. Just before 9KM who should be jogging along beside me - Mother H ! She was trying her best to get me going again but I was spent. She tried to stay with me but I managed to get rid of her - I would have hated to have been the reason she missed the sub 60. The thing is as many people know, I will run and run and run. When I stop running in a race that is because I physically cannot go on any longer. I don't consider this to be a bad thing. Maybe a lack of pacing judgement - but you can't run quickly being conservative ! And at this point I felt sick, light headed and jelly legged ! Not good !
With 800 metres to go the crowd really recharged my batteries and off I went again. I managed to get shifting and everyone was cheering. I lost count of the number of low fives I got. I played up to the crowd coaxing everyone to cheer me on which they did !
Crossed the line innnnnnnnnnn................ 1 hour and 15 seconds !
I was spent and almost sick on the finish mats. Managed to hold my stomach, pose for a few more photos and meet up with Mother H.
Back to GMEX all the rugby lads arrived for a few pics a quick chat and off for some well earned isotonic beer with loads of others !
POST GMR MOTHER H & MONTY !
MIGHTY MONTY PIG !
AND FINALLY THE REASON I HAVE BEEN DOING ALL OF THIS CRAZINESS IN THE FIRST PLACE.
