Away Win in Roma
Apr2320118:28 p.m.
A month on and after my first 2 mile run since the Maratona di Roma I now feel able without the elation of just finishing to analyse the experience without rose tinted sunglasses.
Great Course?
Yes to begin with and over the last 8km but aside from the Vatican around the 18km mark a bland city marathon though fastish.
Cobbles I hear they down play them?
They do play them down but they aren't a big issue when it's dry, they pop up towards the end when frankly you are looking for an excuse, it is though hillier than you are told or so it seems according to my Garmin.
Water stations?
They excel here and at least match Paris the big improvement though on Paris are the sponge stations, if you've ever run a marathon in warm conditions you'll know why this is important, spring marathons often under estimate this, Rome didn't.
PB potential?
Yep I beat mine and slowed down deliberately after 35km mark to sightsee. A couple of pinch points to begin with but infinitely superior to Greenwich/Woolwich/Isle of Dogs, the race time and chip time within 2 minutes for a just sub 4 hour runner.
Atmosphere?
No not really the Moon Marathon when someone starts to market the race will have more, the only support of note came from Brits on holiday supporting friends who know what it means post 30 km to have your name shouted.
It never fails to surprise me how Brits abroad can spot me in a bandana whilst wearing the face paint of the home nations flag, do I run with an accent?
Trevi Fountain worth an investment?
I never had a coin on me when I jogged past what was a major highlight and privilege, if you've seen it before it never looked as beautiful as it did that morning at 37 km, but fortunately having no cash was a result, cos I'm not heading back unless Julius Caeser invades again.
Maratona di Roma is a seen it, run it and forget it marathon. You don't need 2 tee shirts.
Next step?
No idea, the spring marathons are pretty much all done.
An autumn marathon? Well frankly I can't see myself wanting to drag my body through 19 miles for 5 or 6 weeks in late August and early September.
Back to the Track?
Maybe!
I still recall my 1500 PB from the days when Star Wars had only just been released and frankly I hated it. What did I know I'd sell my parents for getting within 2 minutes of it now.
I always intended to go back and improve on it but never expected to wait 30 years to do so.
Can it be done? I don't think so but lets see how the ravages of time have dulled what little ability I had when I used to trail in 4th of 6.
To get within 20% of it would be a result so thats it, the next goal is to set a PB plus 20% at 1,500 by 30 September 2011.
Can't wait to get started on this sprint!!!
