Hooray! I'm back on line. There was a brief break in the middle of the week when I was switching broadband providers, but now I am back with you. I am not sure if the switch has been a total success, sometimes I have trouble getting a signal and I have to resort to the ethernet cable, but my broadband service has speeded up a little bit.
I changed providers in the hope of getting a faster broadband speed; I'm not greedy but my test of an acceptable level is to be able to watch live streaming like on BBC iplayer. Actually I can remember back to the days when watching anything live was a remote dream. Back in the bad old days of dial up, you would click on a link then go away and make a cup of tea while you waited for the page to load!
My new broadband provider is a teensy bit cheaper. Again I can remember back to when you had to pay for the internet at the rate of a regular telephone call. My first telephone bill after acquiring internet access came as a terrible shock and I had to ration my usage accordingly. It may well be, in the not too distant future, that we won't have to pay for internet access at all - it will be freely available, rather in the way you can just turn on the radio and listen anywhere. My local council, Waverly, for example, is providing a free wifi service in the centre of Godalming. So if you lose your connection, you know where to come!
There are lots of new arrivals on this site, which is great. I wish you all the very best for your training and racing. A few people are making the mistake of confusing this section with the forum and posting questions on here. And there have been quite a few this year who have made the mistake of clicking the "Start new blog" button, when really what they wanted to do was "Add new post". So they wind up with around ten different blogs. Remember guys - it's "Add new post"!
I look forward to getting to know some of the newbies in next few weeks and months. I don't necessarily dash in there straight away, as I know from experience, that there are quite a few who post once or twice and then are never heard of again! But if you do stick around, I am sure we will get to know each other in the near future.
I haven't mentioned my own running today. I did warm up (15 minutes) then eight times three minutes fast, jogging one minute between each one. I do this on a fairly flat stretch of road, between two bus stops and try and cover a bit more than half a mile on each one.
So it's the weekend now. Good luck to all those competing in Birmingham, (no Paula alas) and at the Great Eastern Run in Peterborough and, indeed, anywhere else.
P.S. My book for the week has been "Me Cheeta". Back when I was a kid they used to show old Tarzan films on the telly. These would feature Johnny Weismuller as Tarzan, usually Maureen O'Sullivan as Jane, sometimes Johnny Sheffield as Boy and always Cheeta the Chimp as, er, Cheeta the Chimp. Well now Cheeta has decided to spill the beans and tell all about that golden age of Hollywood. It's not actually all his own work - he might have had a little help along the way from a journalist called James Lever. The books is a spoof of all those old Hollywood autobiographies. You know the sort of thing - "So there I was at the Hacienda having cocktails with Cary Grant, when in walked Humphry Bogart and Lauren Bacall. So I turned to Bette Davis and I said ........ blah, blah, blah, blah". It's certainly worth reading if you're a fan of old Hollywood, or of chimpanzees, or just enjoy a little joke at the expense of movie stars.
