Overview

My training for the Virgin London Marathon 2010 has begun!  I'm in under the five rejections rule and it will be my seventh marathon.  My first marathon was the London Marathon in 2006 and my other marathons were Paris (twice), Berlin (twice), and Florida in January 2009.  I'm one of the slow shuffle-joggers at the back of the pack.

This year, I'm raising money for Merlin - an overseas aid charity which provides emergency  medical relief in countries affected by natural disasters, conflict, major disease threat and health system collapse.  I chose Merlin after reading the book "The Lassa Ward" by Ross Donaldson, the true story of a doctor treating patients with Lassa Fever in Sierra Leone.  Today, they are among the charities helping in Haiti after the earthquake.

In this blog, I will keep track of my running plans and keep a running commentary on how life (aka fatigue, excuses and a good bottle of wine) always seems to get in the way of those plans.  I might even get some running done....

Exit, pursued by...

...puppies.

That was yesterday's run.  I've changed my route slightly after my canine encounter a few weeks ago and not encountered any problems.  All dogs I've passed have been on leads, behind fences or generally very obedient.  Yesterday, however, I ran past some stables and just too late heard a woman calling two dogs to come back to her.  I could hear barking behind me and two hulking dog shaped shadows at my heels.  I glanced back to see what horrible fate lay before me and saw two cute bright-eyed shiny black collie puppies running alongside.  Eventually the woman's voice got high pitched enough to get them to stop and back they went whimpering pitifully, their game over for the day.

Apart from that it's not been a great training week.  After last Sunday's soaking, I had a hectic Monday and Tuesday at work.  Things calmed down Wednesday and Thursday and whether it was as a consequence of getting soaked to the skin on Sunday (what my grandmother would have said) or the adrenalin pace of the first half of the week over (my theory), I had a sore throat and runny nose from Wednesday to Friday.  Just enough to stop me from running, reaching for comfort food and to postpone the swine flu vaccination.

Caught up a bit on the weekend by adding a few miles to my runs but the diet went well and truly to pot as daughter 1 came back for the weekend from Uni with a wish-list of signature dishes and desserts.  My self-esteem got a battering going around the shops yesterday looking for a party frock for Christmas.  My smallish waist and round hips look OK in these satin Jessica Rabbit type creations but the overall impression is badly let down by my lack of cleavage.  My daughters told me that boosting my bra with chicken fillets was the best solution "even for women pushing 50" which was not a helpful remark as I am firmly of the view that at 46 I am comfortably still in my mid-forties and more than a stone's throw away from 50.

Weigh-in tomorrow.  Expecting a small gain. Oh well...

Oh I hate it when shopping trips do that to you. Swimsuit shopping with pasty winter bodies tends to do the same for me!
Chalk up last week and start afresh on the training and food front :-)
