Fit fun and forever young at the geriatric Olympics

Just prove you're never too old, the World Masters Games has recently taken place in Sydney with competitors dusting off the cobwebs to prove they can still do it.

The World Masters Games sees competitors from the older generation gathering for what is effectively a geriatric Olympics.
Ruth Firth
Star of the show was 100-year-old Aussie Ruth Firth whose prowess in the shot put saw her throw 4.07m and claim a new world record. Just check out the video clip to see her in action.

But thrower Ruth was to be outdone when it came to being the oldest competitor - that honour fell to 101-year-old Reg Trewin, who was forced to play in the 60+ groups because there was no 100+ age group.

In fact, quite a few of the age categories saw only one starter in the race. In the 100m events for the 85-89 and 90-94 categories, Norma Creais (85-89) from Australia ran against herself and not surprisingly won in a time of 24.01, and Canada's Olga Kotelko (90-94) bettered that by running 23.95. But this didn't quite match the current world record of 23.18 seconds.

Having watched some of the clips from the events, and thinking that a one entry event where the sole athlete is bound to win, makes it all seem like something dreamed up by the Monty Python team. I'm mean, even the Aussie football team were known as the 'Olderoos'.

With that in mind, here's the 27th Silly Olympiad - an event held traditionally every 3.7 years:

It is clear that as we live longer, more and more of us are continuing our athletic and running careers into the older age groups, so keep it up and you might just be able to bag that world record you've always been after. As I'm too young for such geriatric activity, I'll instead see you at the Silly Olympics in 3.7 years time when I'll be competing in the 100m for people with no sense of direction.
