Last row of the dice
A sporting comeback after a lengthy absence is never the easiest of things to do, especially when you are trying to make the comeback in the stage of life where most would consider you were well past your sell by as an athlete.
Who for example would consider they could make a competitive return to rowing and have a realistic prospect of making the Olympics - in the year when they will be celebrating their 40th year.
That is why Greg Searle's current attempt to make the London 2012 team is inspiring. At the weekend, the 38-year-old came seventh in his first public trial since announcing his intention to return to rowing, after less than two months of full-time training.
In beating a host of young high-potential athletes he's put himself firmly in the frame for consideration, and who knows what he will be capable of once he's got some firm training underneath him?

Some of you may remember Searle winning Olympic gold in Barcelona in 1992 with brother Jonny and cox Garry Herbert, who memorably blubbed his way through the national anthem. He picked up bronze in Atlanta in 1996 before calling it a day after the 2000 Olympics.
If he makes it to London - a mere 12 years later - it will be a minor miracle, and one that gives hope to everyone who has a goal, no matter how challenging or how old you are or feel. Just ask Lance Armstrong, Michael Schumacher, or even George Foreman.

I'm 41 and am thinking of taking up speed skating in the hope of getting to 2014 - if anyone wants me to skate for their country - UAE or the like - all I need is some good ice, a pair of skates and a Nike skin suit...' added 15th Feb 2010

Simon_Doyle 'Jamie, you could well be on your way to being our new winter Olympics 'Eddie the Eagle'. Make sure the skin suit is your colour as certain colours can be just so unforgiving.' added 16th Feb 2010
