Reviving the Golden Age of British athletics retro-style

If I told you that last week Bjorn Borg gained his first win against John McEnroe in nine-and a half years, and Sam Torrance came out on top in a tight contest with Ian Woosnam, you might think I've copped a punch from David Haye which has sent me back to the early 1980s in a 'Life on Mars/Ashes to Ashes' scenario.

But it's a fact - these old timers are still at it, and proving that there's life in the old dogs yet with an array of 'Seniors', 'Masters' or 'Champions' events across several sports.

Golf, tennis, and football frequently wheel out the old pros for regular contests. Occasionally some cricketing legends and motor racing legends will come out for good cause, and even the old TV Gladiators have come back to take on the new breed, but in the main, there can't be too many other sports where the oldies get to go at it one last time.

I therefore propose a new idea for Simon Cowell, which would see the Golden Age of British athletics re-born. Could you imagine the opportunity to see an ageing Lord Coe lining up against Ovett one more time, or Cram once again taking on the mighty Moroccan Said Aouita, or even Daley Thompson having a battle of the taches again in the decathlon with Jurgen Hingsen. I'd pay good money to see this instead of suffering yet more X Factor, Strictly Come Dancing, or any other cheap television option they decide to throw at us.

Think that's all a bit far fetched? Surely no more so than the idea of Borg taking on McEnroe! You'd like to think that these former athletes still enjoy the odd jog round the block, after all, if some of our realbuzz oldtimers (and Gordon Brown) can still do it, then why can't these lot?

We could all be witness to a rebirth of one of the greatest rivalries that British middle distance running ever experienced, even if it were decidely at a much slower pace than this:

  • Footnote 'I'm not convinced watching a Coe and Ovett rematch would provide much enjoyment. saying that....... The 2003 Bristol half marathon featured a race within a race, the “Legends Challenge”, which reunited veteran British athletes Nick Rose, Steve Cram, Tim Hutchings, Hugh Jones, Steve Jones and Mike McLeod to compete against each other for the first time since the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics. Nick Rose won this race within a race, aged 52, in 16th place overall, with a time of just 1:11:08. Unlike golf or tennis maybe we need to put an 'age cap' on some of the competitors. I.e. Foster v.s Bedford rematch would last a longtime for a 10k.' added 11th Nov 2009

  • Simon_Doyle 'Agreed that a Foster v Bedford re-match wouldn't get sufficient airtime on TV for them to actually complete the 10k, but who in your opinion Footnote would actually win?' added 11th Nov 2009
