Sweet FA for the World Cup

Proving they have no sense of fun whatsoever, the FA has decided that for the first time since 1966 there will be no official song to mark England's World Cup campaign in South Africa.

Oh joy, I hear many of you say, especially when given the last few lame efforts, including the last load of crap delivered by Embrace in 2006, and shameful efforts from Ant and Dec (2002) and the Spice Girls (1998).

But think about it again. Where would we be without having witnessed John Barnes rapping his way through World in Motion in 1990, or what about seeing the likes of Keegan, Brooking and Francis singing all about 'Ron's 22'  in 82 as they vowed to get it right. Of course, they never did.

World Cups and World cup songs go hand in hand as much as Old Trafford and prawn sandwiches do, or as much as Liverpool and defeats do. Footballer can't sing, but England's World Cup campaign needs an anthem - let's just hope it's not an unofficial one provided by the Crazy Frog 2010 or a comeback from Flat Eric, or even worse Hoddle and Waddle. Maybe Footnote should record one?

  • jamieB 'It's the right thing to do especially if Fabio says - don't argue with him or you might wake up with Rooney in your bed. World in Motion works because there are no footballers on it - okay there is usual out of tune chorus and there is the "Masterplan" rap but New Order just got it spot on - it is the best... Another good one although it's Euro 96 is Black Grape's "England's Irie" - the link with WOrld in Motion being Keith Allen plus Joe Strummer is on it - a nice alternative to those nice Skinner and Badiel blokes... I own a 7" vinyl picture disk of "This Time"...' added 15th Jan 2010
