What the hell?

Feb03201010:11 a.m.

Tell people that you are training for a marathon and most will give you a quizzical look as if you've lost leave of your senses. Tell them you're taking part in a 'tough guy' contest and then they think you've really lost the plot and are maybe having an early (or belated) mid-life crisis.

So then onto the Tough Guy contest which took place last weekend and saw competitors put themselves through a challenging mix of mud, freezing lakes, acrophobia, claustrophobia, barbed wire, fire and electro shocks.

The 8-mile long assault course has to be one of the toughest around, yet this doesn't seem to deter the thousands who put themselves through the kind of challenge that would normally be set by the Gods in some movie for some young pretender.

I am not yet insane and therefore will not be putting my name down for this one, which takes place the last Sunday in January in Staffordshire. If I was put off by the freezing cold, I could always skip the Tough Guy event and go in for the Nettle Warrior challenge in July which uses the same course, but with super strength stinging nettles added for fun. Sounds great.

I always thought for this kind of pain you normally have to go to a dark basement with a lady answering to the name of Miss Whiplash or some equivalent, and cross her palm with plenty of silver. Instead you can hand over £100 to enter the Tough Guy contest for 2011, or £90 for the 'privilege' of pain in the Nettle Warrior event. Will any of you be answering the call?

I thought the cost of the GMR was bad this year but doesn't this highlight how people are cashing in on runners (if you can call them that). It is extreme and I admire people if they complete it but just think they could meet in a pub car park, save the cash and just wave their cocks at each other. Because that's really what this is about, isn't it?' added 3rd Feb 2010

But no, I still just enjoy running and don't feel the need.' added 4th Feb 2010
