It's enough to make Captain Mainwaring turn in his grave or Basil Fawlty to start his goose stepping best, as Britain's best hope of a Grand Slam title has ditched the British sport brand which bears the name of the nation's last Wimbledon Champion for a German brand. Heaven forbid!
The xenophobes and those who "don't mention the war" but still actually do, might be more than a little upset that Andy Murray has ditched the Fred Perry brand for a lucrative contract with adidas.
Murray, who is currently making his way back after an injury lay off, will feel his pains and injury niggles melt away by the pain relief provided by the £3 million per annum five-year deal. And for those proud Brits worried that our potential Grand Slam champ has ditched the British brand after 6 years should console themselves with the fact the Fred Perry is actually in Japanese ownership.
Murray's sponsorship deal puts him among sport's top earners, and the adidas deal allows him to continue to cash in further - his sleeve sponsors Highland Spring and RBS will remain - whereas a deal with Nike would have prevented this. (You start to wonder if Nike 'encouraged' Agassi to wear his lion mane wig as part of his sponsorship deal?)
Last year Murray netted around £2.25m in prize money, so this just goes to show that sponsorship is worth more in monetary terms to some of the top players than actually winning tournaments. So Andy you'll always be a winner, even if you never win a Grand Slam.
