Body Talk
What a day it’s been. I was presenting the news this morning with the lovely and very funny Simon McCoy. The tone for our joint broadcast was most certainly set first thing, when we went on air on the BBC News Channel at 8.30am. Simon had introduced us and I had started reading the first headline in vision, when Simon sneezed.
Now ordinarily a sneeze isn’t that funny is it? But in the context of a solemn headline sequence, it suddenly becomes hilarious, especially when he attempted to stifle it and ended up making a noise like a brisk flatulent. How we managed not to fall off air, I shall never know, but we had the giggles for the rest of the morning.
But he was not alone in his quest to cope with a body that was simply not co-operating. Spare a thought for poor Caroline Wozniacki. The Danish player was in a right state at the Sony Ericsson Championships in Doha. She was within touching distance of a victory over Vera Zvonareva when she suffered a bout of ferocious cramp. The poor girl tumbled to the floor like she had been rugby tackled and then struggled to actually stand up.
I can still remember when Andy Murray used to get cramp in the early days of his career and he used to try and shake it off with a hearty slap of the thigh and a vigorous rub with the towel. But poor Wozniacki was in pieces, literally.
I have had cramp, but clearly never anything like that and it got me wondering whether you hearty lot had any horror stories about when you have been let down by your body at a crucial sporting moment. And also any ideas of a wonder cure? Apparently vitamin E is good for cramp, which in a sporting context is normally the result of dehydration. But too much sugar or caffeine can also be a contributor, although that would probably only affect the likes of you and me and not tip top athletes like the lovely Caroline. I hope she’s okay. I can’t bear to see anyone cry. But watching people sneeze. Now that’s a different matter...
So come on gang. Join in. I want to hear tales of daring-do and defying the odds..... or I shall bore you with my football stories. And trust me. None of us wants that......

Johnf 'I'm sure most of the runners on here will have had perhaps a soleus muscle problem where you can walk no problem, jog no problem, start to run a certain speed and it feels like somebody is drilling into your leg! But going back to giggles, the piece they did a few nights ago on the One Show about the cricket commentary with Jonners and Agnew where they can't stop laughing. Everybody they played it to laughed and most had tears running down their faces. So funny.' added 30th Oct 2009

flanker2 'Oh Sue, I nearly cried for her watching that! Poor girl must have been in agony!.........Anyway, one of my heroic acts was to run FLM 07 with 2 broken ribs and a crushed sternum ( 7weeks prior to, playing rugby)!! It really,, really ,,,really,,, hurt, but I was running in honour of both my parents and with all the training and a new baby etc etc,,,,,there was absolutely no way I was pulling out of it! Thank God for Ibuprofen! ..Still really proud just to have got round, but it took me weeks to recover afterwards..and I raised a bundle of cash for a good cause..' added 3rd Nov 2009
