Chocolate-Coated Love

Well hello and welcome to the almost weekend. A couple of things have caught my eye this week which I wanted to share with you. First things first, it is my birthday today. Now I tell you this not in an attention-seeking fashion, but simply to offer two nuggets of information, which tell you everything you need to know about women. My lovely husband has bought me an array of super gifts which include, padded, yes padded cycle shorts (Jamieb will be thrilled to hear that) and a new gym top. Fabulous. And much appreciated. But he has also bought me chocolate..... Now I ask you. What kind of mixed message is that?

Old Jamaica was a special blend of milk and plain chocolate with rum flavoured raisins

Admittedly it is my favourite chocolate – Old Jamaica and Fruit & Nut. I would, of course love to hear your favourite at this point, because I do feel qualified to lead any kind of best chocolate on the planet debate....I have tried most of them. But it struck me as marvellously ironic. Almost a kind of “here you go knock yourself out with your favourite chocolate and when you’ve finished, you might need this new gym gear.....” My goodness he knows me too well.

The other thing that struck me this week was the return of Justine Henin. As you know I blogged about Kim Clijsters last week and touched lightly upon the point then, but what does it say about the standard of the women’s game? Henin will no doubt be a force to be reckoned with and was also, no doubt, inspired by Clijsters’ achievement at the US Open.

But although that was a great story, it can’t be good for tennis that a player who had been absent for 27 months, could return and win a Grand Slam at the first time of asking so relatively easily. Henin could very possibly do the same and I wonder if it tells us that the women’s game is a little stagnant right now, or is it that these players are so good, they are exceptional in any era? I’m not sure. I think I’m leaning towards a stagnancy argument right now, but please, do let me know what you think.

Obviously I shall be hunkering down, with my chocolate to watch Strictly this weekend, although the pressure is off our Hollins a bit, as he is just doing the group dance this week. I say just.... but you know what I mean. Well have a great weekend and I shall be in touch next week when I will have eaten all of that chocolate and no doubt gained half a stone. Happy days.

Hi Sue and firstly, a very Happy Birthday to yoooouuuu..... I'll celebrate with you later as it's my 10th wedding anniversary today also. To the main question Suchard Milka!!!! It's simply the very best chocolate in the world (to me)......To you're secondary and much less important question??....!!! (hee hee),,I think that to get to the top in a truly global sport such as tennis, you do have to be talented, well trained and very dedicated. For any of these former champs to make a successful comeback after a long lay-off is spectacular and praiseworthy. I do honestly believe that the pool of talent at the very top of tennis is very very good and consistent, so I therefore have to think that for anyone to comeback and regain a top spot must be (flash-in-the-pan excepted) a truly outstanding player.

Yes, happy birthday to you, happy birthday to you..... As well as eating the chocolate I assume you will be road testing shorts and tops? I'm no expert on womens tennis, but do have an opinion, huge gulf, much bigger than in the mens game I think, between the very top players and also rans. I am sure your colleagues at the BBC must have the stats on it, but the number of 6-0s in the womens game says it all.

Not very good on the Chocolate issue Sue, as believe it or not don't eat the stuff.. back to the tennis though i think the Women's game is in a complete disarray, there's no outstanding players on the full circuit. The William's sisters come and go as they please and have had their glory days (in my opinion) and the others never quite get up to the level of greatness the men's game have. There are loads of great players in the Men's game - but alas not in the Women!
