Holding out for an ice-cream

So my friends it is done. I have done battle with Coleen Nolan’s Let’s Get Physical and I think we can call it an honourable draw. So first things first. It's released on December 28th, just as those jeans start to cut into your tummy. It costs £19.99 and features our Coleen and her trusty workout lieutenant Deanne Berry (from GMTV and that slightly fruity Call On Me Eric Prydz video) and three pieces of male eye candy behind them.

There are four workouts of 20 minutes each, featuring 4 or 5 songs and they are; Neon Dance Out. 80’s Cardio Blast; The Leg Warmer Workout and Tone it Up. The blurb promises to “help turn those love handles into love attractions and take a step closer to your dream body”. Well I did two workouts for you my friends and here are my considered thoughts.

80’s Cardio Blast.

I threw myself straight into this one because, as I said the other day, I adore ABC and there were two of their tracks in this one, Poison Arrow and The Look of Love (top five all-time favourite track btw). It is high energy, pump that body and keep on your toes stuff and I was sweating enthusiastically by the end of it. My favourite moment, when Deanne leapt to the floor in the middle of track 3 (Holding out for a Hero – Bonnie Tyler) and threw some random press-ups into the routine. Coleen took one look at that and stood to one side. I was with her on that. I couldn’t do them either.

On the plus side I enjoyed the music, which was magnificent. In fact the whole DVD is 80's tastic. It made me want to rush out and pop on a pair of shoulder pads and put a demi-wave perm in my hair and be Bonnie Tyler basically. This workout was simple on the one hand, because the routine consisted of 4 or 5 repeated moves. However I did sometimes find that hard to follow, which says more about me than the workout I think. I realised after my Zumba dance class, that I have little obvious co-ordination and once again, I am reminded of that. So not ideal for me, but great fun trying and tip top tracks.

Neon Dance Out.

Well I thought I was actually doing the Leg Warmer Workout, but it seems I can’t operate a DVD remote either. I enjoyed this one less I must confess. I just could not get to grips with it at all in the first track. The moves weren’t tricky, I just couldn’t work out what I was supposed to be doing with my feet. Natural rhythm would have helped here and I clearly have none. Again the workout revolved around a sequence of repeated moves and it wasn’t as arduous as 80’s Cardio Blast. But I preferred the first one and would probably do that one again.

So overall good fun and worth having a go. If you like workout DVD’s then I suspect you will appreciate the variety here. I have always veered away from them because I prefer the gym or a run instead. But I have got a stack of workouts to have a look at in the run-up to Xmas, so maybe it will inspire me to do them more often. Deanne can certainly dance and she makes it look effortless, when at times I think, it is a little tricky. But fair play to Coleen. She was a legend throughout and brilliantly co-ordinated. She put me to shame frankly. Happy bopping. I'm off for a sit down and an ice cream. I just fancy a choc ice.

Coleen Nolan - Let's Get Physical [DVD] [2009] Oh, if you think Coleen and her leg warmers could be the best way to work off your festive feasting, you can always get your order in now on Amazon. And dressing in day-glo pink is obligatory.

  • Sue_Thearle 'You are so right. They are undoubtedly the finest pop group of their ilk. I know Sheffield had some great 80's bands (Heaven 17 and Human League to name but two). Butreally. Martin Fry is a musical God and I still have the tiniest crush.......' added 11th Dec 2009
