Skating on thin ice

Jan07201011:30 a.m.

Brrrrr. I don’t know about you, but I am already bored of the cold snap. I can’t tell you the number of times I have pirouetted gracefully a la Torvill and Dean on the ice. Only mine have been on pavements, or even more embarrassingly in the middle of the road on the way to school. I did though get a 5.9 for artistic impression from my daughter, who with devastating logic asked; “Mummy why did you do that?” That child is destined for big things.

So any kind of outdoor exercise is out of the question for me at the moment. I did venture carefully back to the gym yesterday and promptly wished I hadn’t. The excesses of Xmas were there for all to see as I laboured up the stairs just to get to the running machine. And getting into the place was death-defying. You took your life in your hands just negotiating the car park.

Happily I have more than enough workout DVD’s to keep me going. Next on my hit list is Hannah Waterman’s Body Blitz. I have already watched the introductory spiel and man alive has that woman put in the hours. She is unrecognisable from the lady who used to be in Eastenders. I genuinely wouldn’t have recognised her in the street.

She tells you at the start, with the assistance of a humiliating montage of chubby holiday snaps, that she has lost almost 3 stone. Yes 3 flaming stone. Gosh it is very powerful stuff. And I should know. I have my own humiliating montage of pictures to motivate me – they are essentially all of my childhood, when I looked like a potato with a poor haircut. Now I am more of a thick cut chip with better hair....

Seriously though it whetted my appetite. So much so that I turned it off. Not out of a lack of interest, but because it was 10.30pm, which is not the best time to start exercising, as well as being way past Cinderella’s bedtime. So I will attempt to emulate the feat of Ms Waterman this weekend and will report back blisters and all on Monday. In the meantime stay in the warm. It is too cold to do anything else.....
