The Bear Necessities

Feb03201010:24 a.m.

Hello campers. I am smugger than a smug thing in smug land after two, yes count them, two runs in the last two days. I did 5km on Monday at a blistering pace in the gym. Well I say blistering, more pedestrian, but bear in mind, that is blistering for me. And then yesterday, in what can only be described as a monsoon, I did another interval session with my running mate April.

This time it was slightly harder than last week’s. We did 5 intervals of a 4 minute run, one minute walk, two minute hard run and then two minute walk. It was fairly hard work I must say. We did almost 4 miles in total and although I wanted to throw up by the midway point, the only thing that kept me going was the fact that we actually looked like hardcore runners. You know the look, wet weather gear on, branded extras everywhere, plus a baseball cap for me and dark glasses natch (that was a joke by the way).

Actually swimming goggles would have been more appropriate. I forgot I was wearing mascara (a legacy of the school run I might add. I don’t normally pop on any make-up when I exercise, although that is a good debate to start isn’t it? Yes or no to make-up when you exercise – discuss??) However when I had finished my training, I looked a little like Chi Chi the panda, but my goodness it was worth it. So even though my hamstrings hurt like hell this fair morn, I now consider myself a finely tuned running machine.....

So I am edging ever closer to committing to the 8-mile Breakfast Run in Kingston in April, mainly because I can’t think of a good enough excuse not to do it. Obviously I will keep you posted. But as I struggle with the weight of such a momentous decision, the other big news in our house this week, is the horrifying realisation that I have to make my daughter an animal costume for school. She needs it by next week and is so excited about it, I think she might burst. I am less enthusiastic, simply because I am clueless in the making anything department. Oh dear. If anyone has any useful advice, I am all ears.

On the slightly brighter side, I had an invitation I couldn’t refuse this week. I am off to a Strictly Come Dancing fitness class next week. My poor long-suffering husband is joining me. You can imagine how thrilled he was to hear that news. I'm imaging lovely Chris and Ola. I think he is thinking more a combination of Jo Wood and John Sergeant. Happy days. Right have a happy Wednesday and keeeeeppppp dancing.......

  • Johnf 'With zero experience of running with makeup, perhaps if I'd been an 80s kid things would be different, I can't really debate this, but lets look at the misnoma called a school run! A few hundred yards, well certainly for too many people, in a 4x4 is not a school run! Whoops yes you can tell I must be a 60s kid because I hit a grump button there! Good stuff on the running, and I think you are committed to the 8 miler, you've said it on here.' added 4th Feb 2010
