Through the looking glass.....

I can’t tell you how cold it is. Well actually I can, it is seriously freezing out there. I've been running twice this week so far. Four miles in the comfort of the gym on Monday, and then a four and a half (almost) interval training session in the park on Thursday, when I thought my face had frozen into a grimace.

I was all togged up to the nines, but the wind was so strong I was doubled up as I tried to do my faster sections. It actually looked as if I was running backwards, which admittedly was not the intention. I later discovered I had wind burn in all sorts of places. I may start walking with a limp. It sums up how my aching bones feel. But it must be done. I have decided I am definitely going to do this 8-mile Breakfast Run in April, so I have to put the miles in now. But honestly whoever dreamt up the idea of interval training is officially a sadist.

So it’s a packed spring-time programme for me. Oh yes. I’ll be running the Sport Relief 5km in March, the Breakfast Run in April and the Edinburgh Marathon leg in May. Honestly I'll be a veritable machine. I don’t know what I shall plan for June yet. Oh hang on, yes I do. Absolutely nothing. Lolling about. I think I might have a go at that.

Apart from freezing my bits off in the park, and Strictly Fit of course, it’s also been a traumatic week because I’ve had to get glasses for the first time in my life. Now I know I have been very lucky not to have to wear them until now, but it is fair to say I am not taking it well. I now discover that not only do I need glasses for reading, but also for distance too. As I explained to my husband when I called him to break the news, fundamentally that sort of means I can’t really see anything terribly well. He laughed a lot and called me Mr Magoo, which I thought was a tad unkind.

He had his eyes tested this week too and also had to get glasses for reading, so we made a special event of it and chose some together. I had visions of a Sarah Palin type look. I know her politics are, how shall I put it diplomatically, controversial to say the least, but she makes a pair of glasses look sassy. At least that was my imagined look. I fear the reality makes me look like a cross between Chris Evans and Vic Reeves, with a hint of Eric Morecambe thrown in.

You may see me wearing them on the telly. Then again you may not. My daughter roared with supportive laughter when I put them on to show her. That wasn’t the reaction I was hoping for, I must be honest. And my son peered at me and said; “Mummy is that you?” Honestly being a grown up is awfully hard sometimes isn’t it?

  • jamieB 'For a time during the mid-1970's my dad looked a little like Eric Morecambe and would often be approached for autographs. It was a good look and he always declined... When I lost all my hair, glasses became a mask or a shield. They have become part of my persona and look - an expensive obsession - currently wearing Prada Linea Rossa which are very, very cool... I'm sure you'll look great in the glasses - Vic and Chris have great looks. On another note, where are you doing the Sports Relief Mile? My seven year old started "training" today - it's really captured her imagination this year... Sarah Pallin, despite me not liking her politics sometimes does look hot - it is the glasses ya know (and she's a runner)...' added 14th Feb 2010
