Overview

I guess it is official now.  It is not a dream.  I am a member of the Covenant Health Knoxville Marathon Team Challenge 2009.  We had our first team meeting Saturday and met everyone else on the team, took team pictures and got some beginning pointers on what to do and not to do as novices who have decided to turn a new leaf and not only achieve a goal of running a half-marathon or marathon but also lead healthier lifestyles.  I just received my workout schedule for the next two weeks from Coach and I am heading out the door for my "run".....which really means walk/slow jog.  But that is one step closer to my goal of crossing the finish line.  Closer than I was six months ago.  This is also new....I have never "blogged" before!!  Never too old to learn new things.

I did not mean to stay away so long but work and life got in the way.  Have kept busy running and training.  Was doing great and on target until Valentaines Weekend and the Strawplains 10K when I went out faster than MY usual pace and did great for my by almost 2min/mile but unfortunately injured my knee that has sidelined me.  The MRI revealed no apparent tear in the meniscus but lots of inflammation and an extreme case of runners knee and after two rounds of steroids I am still in pain and unable to run.  I have been hitting the gym and using the bike to try and stay in shape but it is not the same.  I am still determined to at least walk the 1/2 marathon but it will not be the same as running my first 1/2 marathon.  It is still two weeks away and maybe it will heal a little more.  Keep running!!

Saturday was another milestone in training.  Finally a warm day to run for the sat am training run.  I have been moving up very, very slowly in my mileage, on a pace all my own.  Sat our choice was 10 or 12 miles but I knew that I could not do either of those distances.  I found a group "willing" to go less and at my slow walk/jog 12-13 min pace and we took off.  We did 8 miles and I could not believe it.  Never in my life would I have guessed I could have done that.  I was slowed down by a sore knee at the end and have got to figure out which shoes work for me.  Overall, I feel ahead of the game on my way to complete a half-marathon at the end of March.  As for my goal of better health and fitness I still need better consistency throughout the week.

What a weekend.  Went on the KTC training run and went 5 miles which matches my farthest run to date and then ran the Reindeer Run 5K the next day.  Busy weekend for me.  Not too sore but still took a rest day monday.  Worked a hard 12 hour shift in the ER Tuesday/today so no gym today.  Will try to get there Wed.  Still have a hard time getting a workout in after working 12 hours on my feet in the ER.

We are running tomorrow morning and the temp is predicted to be 17 degrees.  We must me crazy!!  Pretty sure we will freeze in place.  Will write tomorrow if still alive.  Think the next marathon needs to be in late summer so I will train in spring and summer :-)

This was the first official week of "training" and I was not as consistent as I need to be.  I worked 5-12 hour shifts in the ER and all I wanted to do was crawl into bed when I got home!!  Will have to figure something out which is the whole point of this, to fit a healthier lifestyle in with my weird work schedule.  Ran a 5k today and did meet my goal to "run" the whole 5k without stopping but might have gone faster if I had actually walked fast than tried to run the whole thing!!  The good thing is that there is always a new week to try again.
