About Road to Vienna

Please be patient with me as this is my first blog Laughing

I'm now into week 4 of marathon training for the Vienna marathon on 18th April 2010.  The last time I did any running was 7 years ago when I ran 10k as part of an Estafette marathon in Rotterdam (4 people split the marathon into a relay, each doing a quarter).

Now however, I'll be in my mid-forties by the time the big day arrives and at the moment I'm about 7 kilo's heavier than I was back then.

I'm not totally unfit though.  I do a lot of hiking in Austria these days and 3 years ago I walked Kilimanjaro.  Next year I will also be doing the Coast to Coast from St Bees to Robin Hood's Bay - so 2010 is set to be a busy year, all being well.  However, I need to drop the weight - that is obvious and the reason I first started running again.  One thing led to another and I decided that I needed a target - something to aim for.  A couple of friends on facebook were inspiring me by their running exploits and the next thing I knew, I'd joined mapmyrun.com and started following their 18 week marathon plan for beginners.

As I mentioned I'm now into week 4, having just completed the final and long run of week 3.  It's the first time I've actually started to feel the running in my legs and yesterday the 13.68km run left me very tired.  The last kilometre was a push in all honesty.  Hopefully the 5km recovery run will loosen the ache later today.  It's quite a feeling to wake up with aching legs!
