Road to Vienna

Nov1320092:13 p.m.

Well it's the end of week 4 training.  Having spent the week away on business in Lichfield, I managed to get a couple of training runs in without much fuss.  The first one was when I arrived on Monday night.  Instead of hitting the bar, I put on the kit and went out to initially run 6.44km (4 miles).  i ended up running over 8km - which was a bit of a shock!  I also hit the streets at 6.15am on Wednesday, this time running 6.63km in the rain and almost touching the 10km per hour average.  I have to admit that I will remember never to eat Jalfrezzi with extra green chillies or anything similar the night before an early run!

Today's run was a strange one.  It was the long run of the week at 10.35km.  Beautiful blue skies and a perfect winter running day - but I felt really bad almost as soon as I started running.  At 3km, I felt like I'd hit a wall and in my mind, I was wishing I could stop and walk back.  I wonder if this happens to anyone else?  Anyway, I carried on, in what I thought was a plod.  My heartrate was averaging 166, which for me was too high and I slowed it down a bit.  However, once I'd got back to the car, I'd done the distance in 1:03.22 - which was an average of 9.8km per hour.  For me, that's not bad and in fact I'd beaten my previous time on this route by 2 minutes.  That was a bit of a shock given how I thought I'd done!

It will be a cool down run tomorrow and perhaps a short walk on Sunday in the mountains, especially if the sunshine is with us (we have snow on the tops - so it should be fun).

Next week, I'm in Newhaven, near Brighton, so I hope to get in a couple of beach runs.  5km on Monday and 6.44 on Wednesday is the plan.  On Friday, the plan says I have to run 16.09km.  I'm at the Hilton at Stansted - so I may have to do that one on a running machine, but I'm not sure yet whether or not that's a good idea.  I'd probably prefer to defer it to Saturday and run it outside, and therefore just do a short easy run on the machine instead on the Friday.

  • kraftykat 'Well done on keeping up with the training even though you were away. It does take that extra motivation (and, like you say, it would have been much easier to hit the bar) - but I guess you did that after the run instead! That's quite strange about your long run, not feeling too clever and finishing off in a faster time. Must have been a case of mind over matter. Just keep ticking em off your plan. You're doing great. Have a good weekend and enjoy your Sunday walk. A :)' added 13th Nov 2009

I suppose your body tells you what it needs (when you're exercising) , and the need wasn't alcohol. I think I found the issue with the long run yesterday. I did the same start today for the recovery run, turning around after 2.5 km. At the same point yesterday I was averaging 12km per hour - which was great for me in 2002, but not 7 years and 8 more kilo's later. So I reckoned I bolted too early! Day off on Sunday........but I do fancy a gentle walk in the snow on the mountain. It's crazy here. 20 degrees in the valley, perfect blue skies, sun boiling down......but snow on the mountain. After 2 years here I'm still surprised. Austria is a really great place to live and makes the running so much more enjoyable.' added 14th Nov 2009
