    My Running History

I started running about 10 years ago.  Like a lot of "adult onset" runners, I had to start really slowly.  At first, I could run 100 yards at a time, by which time I was gasping and wheezing loud enough to scare the wildlife.  Then I'd walk 100 yards to catch my breath.  Repeat until exhausted (which was not very long.)

Fortunately, I had a very patient running partner.  He kept me coming out, and slowly I extended my runs to 200 yards, then 400, then a half mile, then a mile, then two, then three.

I held it at that level for quite a while.  Then a couple of years ago, I got the distance bug.  I extended myself to seven, then nine, then 12, and then I started thinking marathon.  In spring of 2007, I ran my first official half marathon in Madison.  Then in fall of 2007, I ran my first marathon, in the Quad Cities.

It's still not clear whether I'm going to run a spring marathon this year.  I am signed up for the Green Bay Marathon in May, but I've missed a lot of long runs, because of the crummy weather in the midwest.  If I can't get in enough long runs in the next month and a half, I'll drop to a half marathon.

But I will definitely run the IMT DesMoines Marathon in October.  I've got all summer to get ready.  Since I run early in the morning, the heat won't slow me down nearly as much as the cold does.

    See you there!

    My other blog

I actually have a blog that I contribute to more or less daily, at http://jogamericablog.blogspot.com/ .  It's the story of my cross country journey.  At the beginning of 2006, I started laying out my daily mileage on a map of America.  So far, I have run from New York City to western Nevada.  You're welcome to check it out.  Or, like most of the world, you may choose to ignore it.

So why start another blog?  Mostly, I'm hoping to get to know some of the other DesMoines Marathoners.  So, if you're reading this blog, please feel free to drop me a comment and let me know a little about yourself.

    Overview

The IMT DesMoines Marathon will be my second marathon.  I'm going to work hard this summer to lower my PR.  (This shouldn't be too hard.  I missed qualifying for Boston by a mere one hour and twenty minutes.)
