Well lead

Feb2220117:59 p.m.

So, I headed out this evening, knowing I had to cover between 4-5 miles (which I did - and about 10.5 minutes per mile - awesome!). The first 2 miles my legs felt like lead and I had stop to stretch them out a couple of times. I know it's because of my long run that they felt that way, so I knew I had to push through because running with slightly fatigued legs will help my fitness overall (right? That had better be right).

Anyway, I got used to the dull ache in my pins and although I felt a bit "argh, make it stop!" at times, I kept on going. Amazing how good music can power you through it - I know people say sometimes it's nice not being plugged into your ipod, but I do really feel that the right tune coming on at the right time can spur me forwards and give me a bit more spring in my step.

The foot felt ok - my calves felt a bit tight today but I am going to book myself in for a sports massage in the next week so someone can pummel them a bit.

I feel quite pleased with this run, actually. There's something quite fab about being able to comfortably run for an hour, isn't there?(although this run was obviously less than an hour but you get my point) I was reading in a running mag the other day an article about someone who was not a natural runner but ran because the feelings of achievement you get from achieving something in a pastime where you aren't considered "a natural" is immensely satisfying. When I was at school the idea of running 1500m was abhorrent to me (dear GOD I can still picture the running field even now) but that distance is a warm up now.

Isn't it great? I need a shower and I need to stretch my legs again later.

Hopefully the next eight weeks I can make progress and feel like I'll make it to the start line ready and able to complete this. I've raised over £1000 for Pancreatic Cancer which is great - because fundamentally I have to remember that is the reason I am doing this.

Hope you've all had a great Tuesday

xxx

ps: I must have had a fairly good posture on Sunday as my core muscles have been aching like mad - I was properly engaging them and laughing is painful as a result! Anyone else had this?!

  • Way_Too_Slow 'Oooh a sports massage. You're brave! ;0) Last time I had one I thought he was trying to make both his knuckles meet in the middle of my thigh!! It did feel better afterwards though! Good to hear you pushed through the lead leg stage. Getting used to running on heavy legs will really help towards the end of the VLM when you will most definitely be tired!!' added 23rd Feb 2011
