GNR Build up :)

Sep1320119:28 p.m.

It's that time of year again! This time I'm pleased to be running the GNR instead of marshaling it. It's always nice to help out but I'm up for giving it another shot this year.Plus this year's run is going to be extra special...

Despite the lack of blogging I have been training pretty consistently. My last long run was 14 miles 2 weeks ago and just a 5 mile taper run last weekend. It's been a fun few months raising money for 'Acorns Children's Hospice'. Obviously it all started with the West highland Way in April when Jane and I managed to raise £500. Since then we have combined our fund-raising with the other members of my running club who are also supporting 'Acorns' at the GNR and we have raised a further £700 Smile.

The inspiration for all the fund-raising came from my good friend George (realBUZZ48) who's Grandaughter Emily sadly died xmas 2006. Since then George's efforts at fund-raising for Acorns have been inspirational (and sometimes bizarre!) and I've been more than happy to try and help out. He recently managed to get an ITV reporter & camera man down to our club to do a piece on our fund-raising. There might be a few shots of us running this week on the local news but I'll be surprised if they show any of my interview with JaneEmbarassed

Because George is so dedicated (and a bit old) he's ran every Great North Run... Yep that's all of them since 1981 (the year I was born George just in-case your reading this Wink) The perk to being an 'ever present' Great North Runner is that you get to start at the front (well, just behind the elite's that is!) This year George has been given a few extra passes so he isn't all lonely up at the front and he was kind enough to give one to me and Jane. So this year I'm starting at the front in Zone A! Whoop! I'll hopefully get to mingle with a few celebs before the starting Gun goes off. The only problem now is that I don't have an excuse not to go for a PB  eek!

  • Alaistair 'I shall be starting right behind you from zone B, normally pick the right hand carrageway, if you see my back/yellow vest say hi and will pull you along for a few miles perhaps? If I don't see you at the start then hope you have a good run & and great day :o)' added 14th Sep 2011

  • realBUZZ48 'I think you might just have mentioned 1981 to me once or twice before ;0) BTW you are at the very front, Elite runners start is on RH side . Don't want them getting in our way & slowing us down over the first mile or so ! Good luck Sunday - don't get too 'angst' about having to get PB. More important to enjoy the day & soak up the atmosphere' added 15th Sep 2011
