Overview

I am embarking on the mission of a lifetime.  I am going to travel to New Zealand, Australia and Eastern Europe over the next 3 months with my husband, John.  Whilst we are away I intend to start my marathon training for Berlin 2008. This blog will track our journey and my running experiences (also John's experiences chasing me on a bike). There are just under 2 weeks until we go..

well we did Vegas half marathon and it was very cool.  Fireworks going off at 6am and Viva Las Vegas blaring down the strip at the same time.  The place was hoaching with Elvis impersonators. It was all a bit surreal.  I did a PB of 2.04:13 and Jenny did 2.01 which is fab.  Well done to us.

Have only done one run this year. My mate Annabelle joined me for a reassuringly ok 4.5 miles. Talked my self out of going today, lets see what tomorrow brings?

Good old John, what a star! He has come out with me on the bike the last 2 weekends.  Did 8 miles last weekend and 9 this weekend.  Both days were freezing and today it was also very wet - yuk! I have to be honest and say that if it wasnt for the upcoming half marathon then I would be inside eating cake.  Cant decide if that would be a better idea or not. 2 more long runs to go, hopefully the conditions will be more favourable. Havent been keeping my training stats bit up to date but have been going to the gym twice each week and running and doing stomach stuff.  Hopfeully that will help my weak bones...

anyway really starting to look forward to Vegas now.....

Jenny and I did the Strathclyde park 10k on Sunday morning. We got there way too early and had to hang about in the rain and wind.  The warm up happened in a muddy field in the rain so that was a bit surreal - 2000 people doing star jumps in the rain in Hamilton. Anyway it took us 56 minutes but we were ankle deep in mud and water at various points so not too bad I suppose.  Feels like an achievement and glad we did it as a kick start for Vegas....only 5 weeks to go!!

Crikey!  After 3 weeks with a total aversion to running I finally went out tonight, albeit for 20minutes but it felt really good. Got to get my act into gear as Jenny and I have entered two races over the next couple of months - Strathclyde Park 10k and Las Vegas half marathon!!!!!

Yes, its amazing - its all booked.  In a new and unexpected twist to "running all over the world" I get to run somewhere else this year and I can't wait.  It sounds totally cool! Jenny thinks it will make us like Dean Karnazes the marathon man running in the desert! I'm not so sure that there are too many similarities...

Let the training begin again....

We finished the Berlin Marathon in 5:07:14.  It was the most amazing experience.  I was laughing and crying at the same time coming over the finish line.  What a totally brilliant day.  The weather was perfect with a cobalt blue sky and the crowd were fantastic with their support.  There was music and entertainment all the way round.  We felt totally ok afterwards, a little tired but fine.  I have felt alot worse after a lot less miles.  I think the atmosphere has a lot to answer for. We stuck to a strategy and it seemed to pay off.  The toilets were the down point, as we had to queue and sometimes they were unusable.  I think our time would have been alot less except for this.  But we werent doing it for a time, just to see if we could.  And we did it!! There were some stops in the bushes I have to admit.

A long time ambition has been fulfilled. Thanks to everyone for there kind support, it really has meant alot to me.  So, would I do it again. I the answer is yes I would...........

Jenny and I did our last long run before the Marathon on Saturday.  8 miles, not too tricky, felt good.  Probably the lack of a further 18 miles on top made it feel good.  Everything has been building up to this week and I can't believe thats really all the training done.  We have decided that its early to bed, lots of carbs and limited mileage this week in preparation for the big day.  I went for a swim on sunday morning but the pool was stupidly busy so I couldnt enjoy it too much.  Will try again later in the week.  Things are nuts at work this week. In fact I am procrastinating on a job application form as I diligently attend to my blog. Its been like an old friend to me, its been with me since April and New Zealand. It remains to be seen what happens after Berlin.  All I know is that I've ran in some fantastic locations, enjoyed all of them and feel a tonne fitter for it. Will try to make one last entry prior to going on Saturday morning.  I wonder what the nerves will be like....cant wait!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well thats most of the hard work done and dusted!  Jenny and I did a 20mile run on Sunday morning.  It took us just over 3 and a half hours.  I reckon we were going pretty fast as there were stops for toilet breaks, purchasing of more water, cheating (to walk up a couple of hills) and to get a free hug from a man dressed as a chicken.  Not sure that I didn't hallucinate the last bit as it was at mile 19 but Jenny did see it too!  I was absolutely broken by the time we got back... Its about the worst that I've felt and rocked my confidence a bit.  I reckon that I am accumulatively tired now so there will be more resting and eating now and less long runs.  We are going to do 8-10 on Saturday.  Meanwhile I am going to keep up the weights and do some swimming and shorter runs.  Getting quite excited now. I read all the paperwork that arrived from Berlin and there are 60 bands on the way round.  Sounds totally cool.... Hope I can be too....
