Vertically Challenged

Early part of the week saw me on a business trip down to North London, so being the dedicated runner that I am I dutifully packed the running kit to take along …..– then dutifully unpacked it all when I got back, still in its pristine condition (apart from the rank smell from the trainers – I must remember that trainers can be very environmentally unfriendly if they have sat in a plastic carrier back for a couple of days).
When I got home yesterday afternoon I was greeted by the youngest daughter kitted out ready to run with the eyes of an expectant dog focussed on her. After offering feable excuses, I’ve just been driving for 3 hours, I’ve only just eaten etc, the dejected looks on dog and daughters face convinced me I really should make the effort and go for a run with them.
Off we headed up onto the Chase. Still a fair bit of snow around but the tracks were clear.
Trotted along nicely, into the face of a blizzard. For all the protection the gloves gave I might as well have not have worn them.
Next was the muddy peaty track along the top of the valley.
A thought briefly flashed through my mind, - this wet mud is very slippery, as I rapidly went from vertical to full horizontal into said mud and slush. Peg just looked, daughter laughed! At least the gloves came in handy – keeping my hands clean which couldn’t be said for the running top or leggings.
Picked myself up and carried on only to stumble over a speed hump about 10 minutes later as we headed back up the road to the car park. (At which point both dog and daughter disowned me)
Back at the car we decided the youngest would drive home while me and Peg ran the extra distance. secretly I think she was pleased not to have my mud encrusted body in her car.
I was sure it was only about another mile across the fields to home, but it turned out to be another 2.5 miles when I checked. Why I ever thought it was just a mile I have no idea, especially as it is a good 1.5 miles from the road I had to cross to get home.
Vertically challenged and mentally challenged.
Still, the longest run of late and despite a bit of muscle tightness towards the end have lived to tell the tale.
5.75 miles 54 mins 53 secs 9.5 min miles

Hola 'Well, I guess the speed bump did its job in curtailing your speed. Glad you went out with dog and daughter - I bet they can both do that 'dejected and unwanted' look well. ' added 24th Feb 2010

Way_Too_Slow 'It's not fair when they look at you with those big soleful eyes is it! And that counts for both daughter and Peg!! You couldn't manage to trip daughter up so she was in the same state as you could you???' added 25th Feb 2010

Kim_Murphy 'I wish I had someone so eager to run. Perhaps it would have kept me on track. It was really nice of you to go especially as I'm sure you were tired from work. Did anyone take pity on your state when you got home and make you a nice hot drink and bath?' added 26th Feb 2010
