A record of my attempt to do my first ever marathon - the VLM 2011. Hopefully this will motivate me to keep it going!

Fatboy summer

Sep0720116:07 p.m.

Well, I grabbed that excuse of a twisted knee and spent the summer sat on my a*se and eating and drinking too much.

Which was lovely at the time but has left me a stone heavier and very, very unfit.   Just before I went back to work and results hell, I had a lovely two night break at Ragdale Hall.  I attempted a couple of small runs on the running machine, but it was the spin class that really brought home to me how unfit I am.  It is pretty disheartening how quickly the fitness goes.  I keep being told that it will come back to me very quickly - I hope so.

I've been to the gym three times this week and the most I have managed on the treadmill is 24 minutes at a rather slow 10.1km pace!!  I have decided I definitely need a goal to work towards. I was wondering about the Wisbeach 10miler at the end of October, if it isn't already full.  Two things stopping me though:

1.Can I get up to running ten miles in eight weeks?

2. If I do it, can I accept that I am likely to end up in the stragglers group?  I have only done one 10 mile run, which was 6 years ago, and I did it in 1.33.  I looked at last years results and that would put me in the last 30 of a field of 400!!!!

Do need to shift this stone though.  I cut off my hair but that had no effect on my weight....

  • runnerbarbie01 'Ah Leila! Don't worry after my first marathon I didn't go running again pretty much until I had to train for the next one - I think the training and the race takes alot out of one! I definitely think you should do the race though as having something to aim for always makes it more interesting and you'll be fine. It is true though - the first few runs will be hell but the fitness will bounce back eventually and you'll be gliding again in no time. Best of luck and let us know how you get on x' added 8th Sep 2011
