Tri weekly running or should that be try weakly running...
Amazing how some events just unfold.
Alaistair posted on my last blog asking if I ever did tempo runs. I confessed ignorance to him, as to me running is putting one foot in front of another till I run out of gas. Anyway, he kindly responded with some helpful advice - so many thanks. I am also today (thanks to Mr & Mrs Amazon) the proud owner of “Run less run faster” – just can’t help but like the title!! So there is no excuse.
Well, no excuse apart from the weather. Still 23 degrees here as I tap at the keyboard.
Struggling to keep to my three runs a week I headed out tonight at 9:30 pm – technically after the sun went down, mainly as we had a late meal - for a short loop round the village. This is my 5k loop. I tried to follow Alaistair’s advice and start slower and build the pace up., but in fact ended up doing three miles at roughly equal pace. 8:49, 8:51 and 8:47. This was a pure accident as running along country paths under trees it was too dark to see the pace on Mr Garmin at all – I just tried to keep it going. Actually ended not far of my best time for the route, but again by chance as I tried to keep the pace steady for the first mile.
So I now have a book, advice from Alaistair, and a few colleagues at work are pushing me towards a marathon –if only for the fundraising potential. Slightly odd reason you may think, but I started in practice 20 years ago today (sudden thought – that makes me sound like the miserable old codger I am) and in a smallish town like ours you get to see a lot of people in 20 years. Also I did get snippets of advice from Martin the mentor, but he has been strangely absent from these pages for a while claiming to be working. Anyway I shall keep them all at bay till I have read the book. At least then I'll know how to talk about running even if I can't do it....
Here’s hoping for a break in the weather soon, but hope you’re all managing to keep going in the meantime.
Fingers crossed for Andy Murray tomorrow.

Muffs 'You know we're all behind you for a marathon and that goes for sponsorship too. Good luck with the book. The only problem with advice is it all seems to contradict each other. The only person you realy need to listen to is yourself.' added 3rd Jul 2009

eclipse 'I think you would be able to reach Marathon levels no problem, you just need to follow a training plan and stick to it, your doing great at the moment with those times. Tel' added 3rd Jul 2009

dizzie1981 'Your taking this running a lot more seriously now by the sounds of it with the book and the new gadget. Your doing fantastic and I have no doubt you would be able to complete a marathon with your dedication. As for the pie and pees, sadly there was no beer but the cup of tea went down nicely with it! x' added 3rd Jul 2009

Skye_Trekker 'So, did the idea of a marathon still seem so appealing when you had sobered up the next morning? Personally, I think that book sounds kind of dangerous...' added 3rd Jul 2009

squa25 'I'm intrigued by the title of this book - If it means I don't have to run as much but be able to do it faster, I'll be down the shop right now! Then again, I could just click a button and also be at Mr and Mrs Amazon... Amazon seems a bit dangerous to me right now, am afraid to use it as had my bank's fraud team call me up just after I bought something from the site... It was a legitimate purchase, they were just checking... Which marathon are you signed up for?' added 3rd Jul 2009

Way_Too_Slow 'If I can do a marathon anyone can!! Just be aware that running faster is more stressful to the body so build it up gradually. Good luck.' added 5th Jul 2009
