Silverstone Half Marathon

Mar1520105:34 p.m.

Well, its the day after my first attempt at running this distance.....AND I DID IT!!!

Finished with an official time of 02.25.25, which i'm really chuffed with. Was hoping for 2.30, but realistically about 2.45, so to get the time I did - so pleased!! I suppose it could've been quicker if it wasnt for the pesky wind!!!

The day was really good. Had stayed over at the Travelodge at the Cherwell Valley Services, got the room for £19 so cant complain. Was ideal really, as not too far from Silverstone and somewhere I'd recommend for anyone running this next year.
Got to Silverstone about 10, and had a walk about while stretching out those muscles. A couple of stalls; Adidas & Lucozade. The queue for the toilets was mental - i now realise how you women feel!!!!

Went onto the track about 11.40 and carried on warming up. Vasaline was on hand - good call!!
Joined the over 2hr runners and slotted myself behind the 11min pace group - optimistic I know, but no 12min pace groups.
Once we started, I ran with along the pace group, but stuck to my plan of walking every 5/10 mins. I managed to stay with the group til about 8/9 miles until I couldnt quite keep up. I found the hills a little difficult on the knees, so walked at these points. At 10 miles, I realised that I might be able to complete this in 2 and a half hours. Somehow I even managed a sprint finish. I say sprint, but I dont think Usain Bolt should be worried just yet!!
Crossing the line felt amazing as the realisation that I had run a half marathon for the first time in my life!

Was so glad that someone was there to cut off the timing chip. Could've been interesting bending down to take that off!!

It was pretty well organised. Had to wait a while to get out the car park, but not too bad. I have to say that the Lucozade and water stations were a god send, and in a compact little bottle so were easy to run with

Taking it easy for a couple of days. Got a few blisters on my feet, as well as a bit of bruising! Have a couple of ingrown toenails if you wanna know! Not nice, so off to the chiropodist tomorrow to get that sorted. Dont want that wrecking the chance of completing the big one in 40 days time!!

  • Sammystar 'Well done you! Good tip for avoiding blisters - put vasaline on the bits of your feet you think will blister then put your socks on and then put more vasaline in the same places ontop of your socks before putting your trainers on - works for me!' added 15th Mar 2010
