Feeling Stabby

Oct1320118:24 a.m.

Dear sports fans, I'm sad to report that it could be the end. Or, at the very least the beginning of the end.

The optimist in me says it could still in fact be the end of the beginning.
And let's not forget it could be something else altogether not even involving the words beginning or end.

What am I talking about?
I'm not sure myself, all I know is that my body, at this point anyway, is politely telling me that's it's unlikely to be able to cope with the rigours of training for a marathon.

The running itself has been going pretty well, probably better than I'd hoped for in the first week and a half (yes a whole week and a half)
Alas, the problems with my sciatic nerve have re-surfaced with a vengeance, and I have a stabbing pain in my hamstring and heel that for now anyway, makes running a complete non-starter.

On the plus side, I'm lucky enough to know the exact cause of my sciatic woes and even how to fix them.  However, as anyone with poor posture will know, changing the bad habits of a lifetime is far from easy, and takes a level of will-power that has escaped me so far in life.

So what's my plan of attack; firstly, I've purchased a Back-Magic Posture Corrector from the QVC website.   The reviews are great but I don't need anyone to tell me that, when your whole marathon training is hinging on a purchase from QVC, things aren't going to plan.

Secondly, I'm faithfully reading, or at the very least looking at the pictures, 'Treat Your Own Back' by Dr Mackenzie, the renowned book of correcting your own postural problems.

And last but not last, I'm resting up by playing Fifa 12 online - that ain't going too well either....

I was pretty handy on 11, but I just can't get the hang of this new tackling system, people either run right past me or I end up giving away multiple penalties...' added 13th Oct 2011

  • Freshharris 'Why is it everyone is having the same problems? Sorry to hear about the bad back, two things I did which I am very glad of a few years ago which really helped were (a) started swimming ( I used to hate swimming so this was on a needs must basis) and (b) loads of hamstring stretches three times a day - I credit them with the biggest improvements. As for Fifa - use Jockey more, stand to strikers up and avoid tackle at all unless you have to block a shot. It takes longer to win the ball back but you get a real sense of backs to the wall defending and then when you have possession you work far harder to keep it. - I'm Freshharris on PS3 if you ever want a game ' added 13th Oct 2011

  • searsp 'Thanks fellas - always good to hear from a couple of fellow Fifa-ers too. I'm definitely improving on Fifa 12 - the defending takes a while to get used to but worth perservering with. Injuries are recovering better than expected as well - back in training tomorrow (once I've finished season 2 - need a point to get promoted to Division 8!) ' added 15th Oct 2011
